Decide, in pairs, what you think the moral/s of 'Shrek' is?

Then, write your conclusion in your book.
Make sure you give detailed explanations for your answers.
Morals in Shrek?
Shrek takes traditional fairy tale conventions and twists them. The ogre is the hero, the Princess isn't a classical sleeping beauty and the Prince isn't charming.

You are now going to choose a traditional fairy tale character and change them.
Consider;
- Are they going to retain any traditional conventions?
- How can you add a twist to the characters and fairy tale conventions?
- Are you going to change their appearance? actions? background? It's up to you!

Start planning your character in the form of a mind map in your books.
Your Turn!
On an A3 piece of paper draw a picture of your fairy tale character.

Label aspects of their appearance that you have changed. Explain why.

Underneath the picture explain how your character is different to the original fairy tale character yours is based on.

Whilst we read 'Little Red Riding Hoody', think about what has been added/changed to make the story modern.
In your groups, read through the extracts from other pieces that have adapated 'Little Red Riding Hood.'
Discuss each extract, focusing on the following criteria:

- What has been kept the same as the traditional story?
- What has been added/changed to modernise the story?
- Which do you think is the best and why?
Answer in your books:

- What are the differences/similarities between the traditional Little Red Riding Hood and 'Little Red Riding Hoody?'

- Which one do you prefer and why?

To be assessed on speaking and listening skills.
To consider and discuss how to modernise a traditional fairy tale.
To consider and discuss fairy tales from other cultures.

Think of a modern day equivalent; for example:

- Goldilocks and the three bears (pushing your luck and getting away with it).
- Rumplestiltskin (being greedy and underestimating other people’s intelligence).

- What style are you going to use to tell your tale?
- Will you be deadly serious; or will you use humour?
Remember
, although many tales are old fashioned and seem ridiculous to us they’re ripe for retelling (as in Roald Dahl’s Revolting rhymes - have a look in the library for a copy if you’ve never read it.)
Remember
the satire used in Shrek - try something similar.
The Style
The Point of View
Now you’ve got the moral and the style,– try and look at the tale from another point of view.

Try a first person monologue from one of the three bears, or Cinderella’s sisters for example. They will have a whole new perspective on the situation!
What are the key preoccupations of our age?
Here are some ideas:
-Celebrity
-Sport
-Money
-Staying young and beautiful.

How does your tale fit into one of these categories?
Be Topical
1. Think of a news story that fits with your topic from the last slide.
2. Now recreate your tale around this story.
3. Remember the moral!
4. Remember the style!
5. Remember the view point!
6. Write a summary of your tale and tell it to the class!
7. Explain why you chose this tale.
Speaking and Listening Assessment - Discuss, as a group, how to update one of the fairy tales given to you.
Pay close attention - there will be a vote for the most entertaining!
Share your updated version with the rest of the class!
Next week we will be looking at mythical beasts.

For homework, research mythical beasts.
Find information on 5 mythical beasts and write an explanation for each of them. You can include pictures if you like.

To use this knowledge to create your own mythical beast.

Plan the qualities your beast will have using a mind map in your books.
Focus on appearance, personality and powers.
Create Your Own Mythical Beast!
Once you have completed your mind map,
draw a picture of your beast on A4 paper
and label all of the qualities. Add additional information (such as personality) underneath the picture.
These will be used for display so make
sure they are neat and detailed!
