History of Cornell Notes
Cornell notes were designed by Walter Pauk, a Professor at Cornell University in 1949. He created the Cornell note method in response to
low test scores
. He based his method on Hermann Ebbinghaus's findings on forgetting. His goal was to help students remember the information that they learned by being more actively engaged in the note-taking process.
Why We Forget
In 1886, German researcher, Hermann Ebbinghuas discovered that immediately following a lecture we obtain 100% of the information. However, by day 2-if we have done nothing with the information-we will have lost 50%-80% of what we learned. He created the 10-24-7 model.
Within 10 minutes after hearing the lecture, review your notes.
On day 2, review notes for 10 minutes and
On day 7 review notes for 5 minutes.
By day 30 you will only have to review for 2-4 minutes to reactivate the brain and keep a high rate of remembering.
