HYPHEN
a short line, supposedly symbolizing a break in a sentence...has nothing to do with the words hype or hyphy.
The hyphen may be the most overworked, under-appreciated punctuation mark in the English language. It's often used when it shouldn't be and absent when needed the most. Could it be that writers don't love the hyphen-that we don't revel in its power and hunger for its clarity? Perhaps. But often, we just don't know any better. After researching this little
gem
, I have discovered that many rules are not set in
stone.
The rules about hyphens can hardly be called rules; there are so many exceptions. So let's take a little journey on what we KNOW.

Let's Get Hyphenated
You use a hyphen when when you're joining a prefix to a word that must be capitalized....
To hyphenate
or not to hyphenate--that is the question.
Rich folk, movie stars, or rock stars who have three names instead of the one name God gave ya.

So according to the dictionary I am rich, or a star because my last name is hyphenated as Lee-Peters.
Everything you've always wanted to know about Hyphens and more!
HYPHENS
Urban Dictionary Definition

HYPHEN

Spontaneously breaking into a dance for no reason while walking down the street.

URBAN DICTIONARY DEFINES HYPHENATE SOMETHING LIKE THIS:
THE HUMBLE HYPHEN
all-American
anti-American
mid-September
pre-Civil War
and when joining a letter to a word.
x-ray
a-list
t-shirt
Use a hyphen to join two or more words serving as a single adjective before a noun.
Example:
Blake Shelton is a
well known
country music artist.
However.....
A
well-known
country music artist is Blake Shelton.
Do not use a hypen when such compounds follow the noun
Hyphenate all compound numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine.

Examples: thirty-one
seventy-six

More Fun FACTS
According to "Chicago Manual of Style" when writing fractions out as words, a fraction as an adjective is supposed to have a hyphen between the two numbers.

Example:
Two-thirds
majority voted yes on the proposal.

But when the fraction is serving as a noun, there is no hyphen between the numbers.

Example: He gave
two thirds
of his fortune to me.

American Psychological Association (APA) says if the fraction starts a sentence it is always hyphenated.
Example:
Fifty-eight
percent of the class failed the test.

A hyphen is used in some words to avoid ambiguity. Without a hyphen you wouldn't be able to distinguish the word or it would change the sentence.

Example: Running in the mountains is my favorite type of
recreation
.

Example: I saw the
re-creation
of "
Flashdance
" at the Wharton Center in Lansing.

Also use a hyphen to separate awkward double or triple letters.

Example: semi-independent rather then
semiindependent

If a word must be divided at the end of a line, divide it correctly. Always divide between syllables and
NEVER
divide a one-syllable word.

Example: My vehicle was in the shop
be-cause
of mechanical problems.

Example: The car didn't have the stre-ngth to make it up the hill.
WRONG!!!!
strength
is a one-syllable word.

NEVER divide a word so that a single letter stands alone.

Example: Her Mother said that after the game she was going to c-
ome home.
WRONG
!!!

When dividing a compound word at the end of a
line, either make the break between the words that form the compound or put the whole word on the next line.

Use a hyphen withe prefixes all-, ex-, and self- and with the suffix -elect.

Last but not least, to divide long e-mail and internet addresses, do not use a hyphen. Break an e-mail address after the @ symbol or before a period. Break a URL after a colon, a slash, or a double slash or before a period or other punctuation mark.

Most importantly of all, when in doubt, check in out in a dictionary.
