Transcript of Pansori performance -

This song presents a metaphor between the changing of the seasons from spring to winter and the passage of a lifetime. With the coming of another spring, we are reminded that they are in finite supply and with the passing of each one, we lose just a little of our youthfulness. The message: live your life well, use the time you have and enjoy the relationships you have, for soon we will return to the earth from whence we came.
The song of four seasons
This is the love song from the Song of Chunhyang, one of Korea’s most well known stories. The song describes the playful courtship of young lovers.
Love song
Pansori was never static. One of the interesting features of the history of pansori is the way people adapted it to suit the changing tastes of its audience. This song combines traditional and modern sounds. The story is taken from one of the remaining “traditional” pansori stories, Song of the Underwater Palace. It tells the story of a turtle living in the Underwater Palace charged with the task of procuring a rabbit’s liver to cure his King’s illness, a seemingly impossible task. The theme typically associated with this story is the Confucian principle loyalty to king. A more contemporary consideration might be on the power of determination, of having a goal and never, ever giving up.
A turtle at his wits end

After several weeks of illness and many failed treatments a divine vision came to the King of the great underwater sea palace telling him his health would be restored with medicine made from the liver of a rabbit. Hearing this, the great King directed his trusted ward, the turtle to leave the underwater palace, find dry land and bring him a rabbit. Completely at a loss, the turtle replied...

Nan gam ha nae, Nan gam ha nae, Nan gam ha nae
Where is earth? Where is land?
Who is this rabbit? What does he look like?
How am I going to get his liver?

Nan Nan Nan Nan Nan Nan Nan Nan Nan – Nan gam ha nae

I don’t like money. I don’t like awards. I don’t like titles.
I really don’t want to leave this world.
Now I have to go to that rough world.
Aigo – Poor me.
Nan gam ha nae

The turtle searched high and the turtle searched low, still he could find no rabbit though to be honest, being from the sea he wasn’t really sure what one looked like. At long last on a far away hill the turtle spotted the nose, ears and mouth of what had to be a rabbit. “That must be a rabbit.” He approached the rabbit and said…

“Ah, hello Mr. Rabbit. It’s nice to meet you.
I am the Sea King’s representative, turtle.
My King has decided to give you a big prize.
Ja Ja Ja Ja Ja Ja Ja Ja Ja – Let’s go to the underwater palace.

There you will find all the delicacies of the world.
Everything is covered in gold.
His Highness will even give you a title.
Come to the palace with me. Enjoy wealth and prosperity.

To this, the rabbit replied.
No way jerk!
