Corruption in the Midevil Church
Transcript of Corruption in the Midevil Church
the voice of Christ. They took advantage of the rich
and scammed them for their money. Their vows of poverty and Chasity were not kept. The church was spreading the word of eternal damnation for sinners, and they could buy their way to heaven. (Medieval Church Corruption Problems) Nuns Even to this day, nuns must take 3 vows and live by these vows as long as they are apart of the Catholic church.
The vow of Poverty
The vow of Chasity
The vow of Obedience
Nuns live a strict life of discipline and routine in the Medieval convent. Bishops: Often wealthy Had their own castles Levied taxes and settled arguments about marriages Monks lived in monasteries and groups. They wore brown robes and hoods around their head. Well educated and could read and write Latin. Some of the first encyclopedias were written by monks. Monks were often the only source of Bibles.
(Medieval Church Corruptions) Monks The church sold indulgences so they could "buy their way to heaven". They told them that once they are in hell, no amount of money can get them out.
They also said you could buy indulgences for uncommitted sins. The indulgence is not permission to sin.
An indulgence will shorten your time in purgatory by a fixed number of days.
(Medieval Christianity- Indulgences) Selling of Indulgences Being a monk, priest, or nun meant taking vows. When you dedicate your life to the church, taking a vow of chasity is mandatory. This means you may never get married or have sex. However, when nuns began getting pregnant questions started coming.
(Catholic Vows) Vows of Chasity Dedicating your life to the Catholic
church also meant you must take
a vow of poverty. You can not own
anything! You do not have any money
either. Your family was expected to
(Catholic Vows) Vows of Poverty Nuns that lived in the convent were very self sufficient. They farmed their own food and made their own clothes. If you were a young girl in trouble, you went to the convent and they would help you and not tell your family. If you were pregnant, you would tell your family you were going to help a sick relative. You would have the baby at the convent and they would often sell it for money for the curch.
(Middle Age Nuns) The Medieval Convent The Catholic church still has the basic rules and requirements for the clergy of the church. There are still scandalous things going on in some countries in the church. You must still take your vows. They are secretive behind doors, but more accountable to the public. They are the most wealthy organization. The Catholic church is the largest organized religion in the World. Unfortunately, there are not as many vocations as there used to be.
