What Is a Firewall?
Definition:  A Network Firewall is a system or group of systems used to control access between two networks a trusted network and an untrusted network (such as between corporate network and the Internet)
using pre-configured rules or filters.
Firewalls can either be hardware and/or software based.

What Firewall Cannot Do
The most common misconception about firewalls is that they guarantee security for your network.

A firewall cannot and does not guarantee that your network is 100% secure.

Firewalls cannot offer any protection against inside attacks. A high percentage of security incidents today come from inside the trusted network.

How Firewalls Work
There are two security design logic approaches network firewalls use to make access control decisions.

Everything not specifically permitted is denied.
Everything not specifically denied is permitted.
Firewalls AND Anti-virus
Both software are two fundamentally different kind of security application.
Both design to Protect.
Anti-virus design to deal with maliciously design programs.
firewall is setup to block access from unwanted network communication.
Firewalls AND Anti-virus
In general, firewall cannot product against viruses, for this reason we use anti-virus.
However, many security suites such as those offered by MacAfee and Norton offer the complete protection.
Some software firewalls such as Zone Alarm Pro may contain limited virus protection features.
Hardware Firewall
They protect every machine on a local network from the outside world (internet)
Software Firewall
A software firewall is running directly on a computer.
They provide a first line of defense against common forms of attack coming from the outside world.
Examples of hardware firewalls : Cisco PIX, SonicWall, NetScreen, Watchguard.
Advantages and Disadvantges
Take a closer look at malicious traffic and intercept it before it leaves your computer.

Examples of software firewall : Microsoft ISA Server .
Advantages and Disadvantage.
