Artistic technique

Pictorial interpretation of story, theme, or concept;

Appropriateness of style of illustration
to the story, theme or concept;

Pictures must tell plot, theme, characters, setting, mood

Recognition of a child audience.

The book must be a visual experience.

Children are an intended potential audience.

The book displays respect for children’s understandings, abilities, and appreciations.

The Caldecott Medal and Honor may be awarded posthumously.
