What criticism of American society did the individual have?

After Mann stopped practicing law, he was appointed to be Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education. This post allowed him to "spread the gospel of education as social redemption." His ideals spread through his books and the establishment of the Common School Journal which spread the message that public schools should be more nurturing and open.
After his death, Mann was referred to as the Father of American Education. Some historians' views vary on his impact on America. Some say his efforts for an equal school and improving education were very important. Others see the school Mann established as "a rather blunt tool for social control, one that tended both to stifle intellectual curiosity and to suppress diversity."
Something interesting about Horace Mann is though he thoroughly endorsed higher education, he only orginally had 8-10 weeks per year of sporadic education. Otherwise, he was self taught by reading volumes from the Franklin Town Library. This self education and some education with a school master was enough to get him into the sophomore class at Brown University in 1816. He went on to be a lawyer and then an advocate for education.

Horace Mann's focus on education was to get equal education for everyone, no matter the class. He also revolutionized how teacher's are taught and founded the school for teachers to be taught to be teach.
Horace Mann had a love for education, but not so much an obsession, he did stick to his guns when it came to his ideals, but he doesn't have the qualities of an obsession with schooling. Education was a belief he believed strongly in, not something he obsessed over.

Horace Mann did get the ultimate victory he was striving for, even if not in his lifetime. Because of his ideals we have an equal education for all and a higher education for those who teach.
