January 1961 - US sends a chimpanzee named "Ham" into a
suborbital
flight
April 1961 -
Cosmonaut
Yuri Gagarin is the first human in space
May 1961 - Astronaut Alan Shepard is the first American in space
February 1962 - Astronaut John Glenn first orbital flight
Gemini 1962-66
Goals: Orbital maneuvers, rendezvous and docking, extravehicular activities (EVAs)
June 1963 - Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova becomes the first woman in space
March 1965 - Gemini 5 astronauts spend nearly 8-days in space
December 1965 - Gemini 6 completes the first rendezvous in space
March 1966 - Gemini 8 astronauts complete first docking in space
Apollo 1967-1972
Goals: To land a man on the Moon
January 1967 - Three astronauts die in a practice launch
October 1968 - Apollo 7 orbits Earth with a three-man crew
December 1968 - Apollo 8 circumnavigates the Moon, the first astronauts to leave Earth's orbit
July 1969 - Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin complete the first of six total Moon walks during the Apollo program
