Transcript of Deforestation

Effects of Deforestation (cont.)
Deforestation can lead to severe erosions as soil is exposed to heavy rains.
Grazing or plowing after deforestation can cause permanent changes to local soils and microclimates that in turn prevent the regrowth of trees.
What Is Deforestation ?
Deforestation is the removal of forests or stands of trees where the land thereafter is converted to a non forest use.
It is an urgent environmental issue that jeopardizes people's livelihoods, threatens species, and intensifies global warming.

Where Deforestation Occurs
Deforestation occurs in the rainforests and other large wooded areas.
We are cutting mass amounts of trees to produce many different products.
It occurs worldwide.
Some main areas of concern are the Amazon Rainforest and Colombia.
Colombia loses 741,000 acres of forest annually due to illegal logging and drug cultivation in the region.
Around one-third of the country's original forest has been removed as a result of Deforestation.
Possible Solutions to Deforestation
Specific Case of Deforestation in Colombia
One of the main causes of Deforestation in Colombia is the national Plan Pacifico which is intended to raise revenue to develop the economy.
The plan includes exploration of the country's rainforests for the extraction of precious natural resources for exploration.
One possibility is educating the tribal communities who sell their land to the government for deceivingly small amounts of money.
Also, we could find a resource other than wood for producing the products that come from clearing forests.
In order to achieve zero deforestation by 2020 we need ambitious and science-based domestic and international forest policies from our government.
All people can help by buying recycled or certified wood, and only products that are not a result of deforestation.
Effects of Deforestation in Manhattan Beach
Deforestation affects us, students in Manhattan Beach, in many ways.
The amount of oxygen available is decreased.
The amount of carbon dioxide is increased.
Many species of animals are threatened and can even die out.
We lose many areas of nature
Problems caused by Deforestation
Tropical deforestation is responsible for approximately 20% of world greenhouse gas emissions.
It also contributes to global warming.
It causes carbon dioxide to linger in the atmosphere.
In deforested areas, the land heats up faster and to higher temperatures.
It reduces the world's supply of oxygen and releases 1.5 billion tons of carbon per year into Earth.
