What is Labeling?
Give a name or symbol to an object or person.
Most human differences are not consider to be socially relevant.
Example..
From General Hospital
For Common people
Retarded
Crazy
Weirdo
Weak
Unintelligent
However….

Some differences awarded a high degree of social issues. Such as people who disabled.
Label  deviant activities
Some may label them negatively (sounds offensive)

Stereotyping..
Judging someone with personal view points.
Common Stereotyping example
All American officers like to eat donuts and drink coffee.
All Russians are good fighter.
Women with luxury appearances are only interested on money.
There is no true love in rich families.
All Malays are like to join “Mat Rempit”.
Stereotyping on mental disability example
Incapable of doing things.
Doubt his ability.
They may bothering other people.
Refuse mental illness work together
Not a good sexual relationship.
Weak and vulnerable.
Always sick and cannot enjoy everything.
Easy to bully.
Effect
These stereotyping assumptions will make them feel sad and depressed.
Involve two groups of people:
Labeler
Labelled person
People always have preconception to the labeled people.
Occur though two procedures:-
labeled person being set apart from others.
Link the labeled person to undesirable characteristic.
Label person being set apart from each other.
Society tend to judge the labeled people by their physical appearance, physical disabilities, mental abilities or disabilities and thus society SEPARATE “them” from “us” .
Link the labeled person to undesirable characteristic
Society always have a preconception to view the labeled person. They LINK those labeled person as incompetent, untrustworthy and need to be avoidance.


Example
People with disabilities is being send to disable centre to learn craftsmanship.
People tend to send the autistic and hyperactive children to some specialist centre for special care.
People also judge autistic and hyperactive children according “their” behavior characteristics, mental abilities or disabilities.
A person is on a wheelchair or been hospitalized for their disabilities going for a job interview and they may not be admit by the company.
Separation
Society seen those labeled person are not a part of the society and they have been look down by the society.
Example
People may refuse to rent an apartment to a person with physical or mental disabilities.
People with leprosy in Malaysia were gathered in specific places to avoid “them” participate the social life.
People with alzheimer disease as they receive low levels of funding for research and treatment.
A job interviewer may rejecting an application form from a disable women.
Consequences
Affected their education and employment opportunities in their life.
Reduce their opportunities for fully participated in social life.
Increase emotional stress and social isolation.

located solely in biology.
due to disability-produced impairment.
disabled person is a “victim” .
disability is self-concept, self-definition , social comparisons, and reference groups.
disability is needing help and social support.
