The Role of the Media
The media is the main form of communication about sport and there are four types of media that have the greatest influence on sport.
Television
One of the most powerful and commonly accessed form of the media
Transmits as digital and analogue
First sport dedicated channel was Sky Sports 1 in 1991
Specific government enforced rules on the transmission of sports events
i.e. listed events
(e.g. Wimbledon, FA Cup Final, the Olympics etc.)
cannot be shown on 'Pay Per View'
(Where you pay and watch one specific event/broadcast at a time)
or on cable/satellite networks.
Radio
Introduction of DAB
(Digital Audio Broadcasting)
has lead to growth in number of stations
Now also dedicated sports radio stations e.g. BBC Radio 5 live
Advantages of Radio over television:
Broadcasting Costs are Lower - Only one commentator needed, only requires cheap + low-tech equipment
Radio's are cheap and portable, so easily accessible to everyone.
Press
There are three ways that the press can inform readers about sport.
Newspapers
Both daily newspapers and weekend publication contain a sports section, traditionally at the back.
Magazines
General magazines, including those given away a supplements inside Sunday Newspapers, include sport related stories. There is also becoming an increase in the number of sports specific magazines, such as athletics weekly or Match of The Day Magazine.
Books
e.g. novels with sporting themes, textbooks, or sporting autobiographies
Information Technology (IT)
Most recent addition to the media.
Examples of media in IT are CD ROMS and the Internet
Many internet sites now allow the streaming of live radio/television broadcasts.

The media can have positive and negative influences on sport.
