FDA ( Food and Drug Administration) regulate dietary supplements in three important respects:

1. Manufacturer of a dietary supplement or dietary ingredients is responsible for ensuring that the product is safe before it is market.

2. Dietary supplements are considered safe until proven otherwise.

3. Actions will be taken only “when the FDA proves that the product poses a significant risk to the health of Americans”.

FDA states that “all marketing for diet pills must be truthful, non-deceptive and must not be unfair. If a diet pill advertiser makes a claim, for example, it must have evidence to support it and cannot mislead consumers into thinking the pill does something it does not”.
A grey zone

Government:
Stricter regulations are needed, especially for on-line
selling (better to be banned)
Move from food to prescription drugs
Promote “healthy” rather than “thin”

Media:
Educate the public on weight-loss fraud issues
Disclosure false weight-loss ads

Manufacturer:
Testing
Recommendations on daily dosage as well as an appropriate duration of administration
