Regardless of the type of cupcake being baked, the equipment needed to make the cupcake is the same.
When cupcakes first became popular in the 19th century, hearth ovens were still being used for baking. People used earthenware cups that could withstand the high temperature. At the end of the 19th century, temperature controlled ovens became available and baking the cupcake became much easier.
Gem pans, or muffin tins were common in households and in the 20th century, people started using them to bake cupcakes. Pans made especially for cupcakes developed later in the 20th century. These included pans that made heart and star shaped cupcakes.
In the 19th century, cupcakes were lined with paper but only so that the cupcake would not stick to its mold. Modern decorative paper linings did not surface until after World War I.
