The trait for
red hair
is a recessive gene, meaning that anyone with it as well as a dominant gene would express the dominant gene instead of the one for
red hair
. The gene would still be there, but would remain invisible in the person it is in.
Hair color is also affected by two pigments:
Eumelanin
Pheomelanin
The amount of
Eumelanin
a person has determines their hair color for
blonde
,
brown
, or
black
hair. A small amount of
Eumelanin
leads to
blonde hair
, a decent amount results in
brown hair
, and a lot of it causes
black hair
.
Phemelanin
is what determines just how
red
someone's hair is. The more somebody has, the
redder
their hair is.
Varying amounts of
Eumelanin
and
Pheomelanin
is what causes other hair colors. Having just a little of each leads to having
strawberry blonde hair
and some of each causes hair to be
auburn
. Having a lot of
Pheomelanin
and only a little
Eumelanin
leads to
red hair
.
On my mother's (Denise) side of the family,
red hair
is not very common.
The gene for it
, however, is passed down through the family through
hetero
zygous
carriers for
the gene
.

homozygous dominant
. That means that any children they had would either be
homozygous dominant
like Walter or

The amounts of each pigment that are made are determined by the gene "
Melanocortin 1 Receptor
" (
MC1R
). When activated, it will spark a series of chemical reactions inside of
melanocytes
.
Melanocytes
are specialized cells tasked with producing
Melanin
. This stimulates the
melanocytes
into producing
Eumelanin
. Whenever these
melanocytes
are not activated or are blocked, they produce
Pheomelanin
instead. MC1R is located on the 16th chromosome.
