Transcript of Gender Inequality
Education helps men and women claim their rights and realize their potential in the economic, political and social arenas. It is also the single most powerful way to lift people out of poverty.
Cultural and traditional values stand between girls and their prospects for education. The achievement of girls’ right to education can address some of societies’ deeply rooted inequalities, which condemn millions of girls to a life without quality education – and, therefore, also all too often to a life of missed opportunities.
Basic education provides girls and women with an understanding of basic health, nutrition and family planning
Female infanticide is the intentional killing of a baby girl within 24hrs of the child's birth.
The preference for male babies coupled with the "one child per couple" policy has led to an increase in female infanticide, the concealment of female births, sex-selective abortion, and the abandonment of infant girls.
Women who fail to produce a son are often subject to ridicule and abuse, or are cast out of their husband's home to return to their family in shame.
Female children are looked upon as a burden on the family. This notion is perpetuated by the low status of women in society, as well as the dowry system in which a bride's family is expected to give large sums of money and goods to the husband's family with which she will live after marriage.
Because in today's world despite the emancipation of women due to education which dismissed them from traditional roles, men still have the upper hand in most societies.
What does it do?
In Southeast Asia also, men continue to earn more than women. According to the World Economic Forum, several countries in the region surpassed the average score of 0.64 documented for 135 countries in 2012 (with a score of 1 denoting gender equality). The Philippines (0.79), Thailand (0.74), Malaysia (0.82) and Singapore (0.81) are examples. Others, however, such as Indonesia and Vietnam fared relatively poorly in comparison with their neighbours, scoring 0.67 and 0.68 respectively
women still face persistent obstacles in the workplace because this domain remains largely male-dominated.
Removing every shade of discrimination against female employees in the area of promotion is also equally important. The numbers of women in decision-making positions in corporations and businesses continue to lag behind men because of the glass ceiling...

1. Discrimination towards female is more general in developing or undeveloped countries.
2. Women have traditionally been viewed as being caring and nurturing and are designated to occupations which require such skills, while these skills are culturally valued, they were typically associated with domesticity, so occupations requiring these same skills are not economically valued.
3. Men have traditionally been viewed as the breadwinner or the worker, so jobs held by men have been historically economically valued and occupations predominated by men continue to be economically
valued and pay higher wages.
Differences between the past and present
1. Promoting gender equality has been more successful than past years. Statistics have shown a huge improvement on number of female graduates, female employment and income on their jobs.
2. Population is reaching a balance between the two genders through effective gender equality promotions carried out by activists and female protection groups.
The Marriage Law and
's Protection Law prohibit female infanticide, and the latter prohibits discrimination against women who give birth to daughters.
The Sex Selective Abortion Law and Maternal Health Care Law of 1994 were created to put an end to sex selective abortions, and the latter prohibits the use of medical technology to determine the gender of a fetus.
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu enacted the 'Jayalaitha Protection Scheme for the Girl Child'. ...

Government programs and human rights organizations strive to put an end to these practices with education, financial incentives, and threat of punishment, female infanticide continues...
When women and men share power and influence in all aspects of community life, we will have a fairer and more democratic society. Gender equality also contributes to economic growth by promoting people's skills and creativity.
Steps: action plan to combat men's violence against women, the action plan against prostitution and human trafficking for sexual purposes, the research programme on women's health, an initiative on gender equality integration in municipal activities and the gender equality initiative in the field of education, approved by the Government in June 2008.
government should enforce more such policies to meet the demands of gender equality and giving a chance to women.
Organisations such as the Afghan institute of learning works towards educationg women, girls, men and boys. AIL is there for all the disadvantaged who need help. Approximately 70% of the direct beneficiaries of AIL's programs are female but men and boys also need the chance to make changes in their lives and communities. That opportunity to make a small change is what makes a huge difference in people's lives.
There are also other non-profit organisations which works towards educating...not only the women but also those suffering from poverty in third world countries...such as
1.Nataionality : Given a preference for boys over girls that many male-dominated societies have, gender inequality can manifest itself in the form of the parents wanting the newborn to be a boy rather than a girl. There was a time when this could be no more than a wish (a daydream or a nightmare, depending on one's perspective), but with the availability of modern techniques to determine the gender of the foetus, sex-selective abortion has become common in many countries. It is particularly prevalent in East Asia, in China and South Korea in particular, but also in Singapore and Taiwan, and it is beginning to emerge as a statistically significant phenomenon in India and South Asia as well. This is high-tech sexism.
2. Basic facility : Even when demographic characteristics do not show much or any anti-female bias, there are other ways in which women can have less than a square deal. Afghanistan may be the only country in the world the government of which is keen on actively excluding girls from schooling (it combines this with other features of massive gender inequality), but there are many countries in Asia and Africa, and also in Latin America, where girls have far less opportunity of schooling than boys do. There are other deficiencies in basic facilities available to women, varying from encouragement to cultivate one's natural talents to fair participation in rewarding social functions of the community.
3) Special opportunity inequality: Even when there is relatively little difference in basic facilities including schooling, the opportunities of higher education may be far fewer for young women than for young men. Indeed, gender bias in higher education and professional training can be observed even in some of the richest countries in the world, in Europe and North America.

1.Through the gender inequality, cause traditionally female jobs pay less because it is women rather than men who do them, the law does not presently view such differences as discrimination. To combat this problem, equal rights activists are striving to close the wage gap between women's jobs and men's jobs by mounting a fight for pay equity. The goal of pay equity is to raise pay levels for occupations in which women and minorities predominate. Raises would be accomplished by subjecting jobs to a rational evaluation that would assess their "worth" in terms of skills and responsibilities of the work itself. Because pay equity calls for jobs of comparable value to be paid the same, it is also called comparable worth

2.Although many wife-husband relationships are moving toward equality, men continue to exercise greater power within the family. A cycle of power relations connects work and family. The higher the husband's occupational status, the greater his power. Such resources are acquired outside of the family. We have seen that women's opportunities to acquire these resources are much more limited than are those of men.
