fact 1 fact 2 fact 3 http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/kids/forces-of-nature-kids/lightning-101-kids/ fact 4 Lightning and lightning rods lightning lightning rods A lightning rod ,or a lightning conductor is a metal rod mounted on top of a building, electrically bonded using a wire or electrical conductor to interface with the ground through an electrode. It was engineered to protect the building in case of a lightning strike. If lightning targets the building it will most likely strike the rod and be conducted to ground through the wire, instead of passing through the building, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution. Lightning is a massive electrostatic discharge caused by unbalanced electric charge in the atmosphere, either inside clouds, cloud to cloud or cloud to ground, accompanied by the loud sound of thunder. lightning A typical cloud to ground lightning strike can be over (3 mi) long.A typical thunderstorm may have three or more strikes per minute at its peak. Lightning is usually produced by cumulonimbus clouds up to (10 mi) high, based (3-4 mi) above the ground. Lightning is caused by the circulation of warm moisture-filled air . Ice or water particles then accumulate charge as in a Van de Graaf generator . Lightning may occur during snow storms , volcanic eruptions, dust storms, forest fires, tornadoes and Hurricanes. Copper is the most common materials used in lightning protection. Copper effectively and rapidly facilitates the transmission of lightning energy to the ground because, of its excellent electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance characteristics. Also, it bends easily compared to other metal materials. VIDEOS THE END AND THANKS FOR WATCHING lighting rods
