There were several factors that IDC documented as to why organizations looked to replace their backup infrastructure:

Limited DR plans

Benefit 1: Reduced Backup Costs
With EMC:
Companies reduced backup costs on average by $1.7M per year including $627K

from eliminating tape and$909K in storage capacity by adding deduplication.

Benefit 2: Reduced Backup Management
Before:
IT staff spent on average 37 hours per week managing backup and recovery tasks.
With EMC:
IT spends on average 75% less time, about 9 hours per week.
Modernizing Backup
The technology foundation put in place by companies in the IDC study to reduce cost and improve operational efficiencies include:
Replacing tape with purpose-built backup appliance
Adding deduplication to the backup process
Consolidating backup management across various applications
