Eisenhower as the President
We Like Ike
- He ended the Korean War but the Cold War continued
- Appointed John Foster Dulles as the Secretary of State
Dulles wanted to do more than contain communism...he wanted to erase it.
- Became a big fan of the CIA
Allen Dulles was the director of the CIA
The Beginning of the Ike Era
- Stalin died in 1953
Nikita Khrushchev took control of USSR
~ Hungary tried to leave the Warsaw Pact so Khrushchev sent the Red Army
- In 1955 Eisenhower and Khrushchev met in Switzerland
Ike proposed letting planes fly over each other's states
decision led to the creation of U-2 spy planes
The New Leaders
- In 1954, France gave up on keeping Vietnam as a colony
Vietnam was split in two...communist north and democratic/capitalist south
- Vietnam was supposed to vote which government to keep in 1956 and unite...
Asian Issues
- The creation of Israel as an independent country in 1948 caused a lot of problems
promises were broken with the Arabs
- Gamal Nasser led a revolution in Egypt with the goal of strengthening the Middle East (hated Israel)
Middle Eastern Problems
- Eisenhower gave his Domino Theory
created Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO)
~ Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain, France, and the U.S.
the U.S. provided military and economic aid to South Vietnam
- Nasser played U.S. and U.S.S.R. off of each other
- Suez Crisis almost brought the world to war again
Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal which had been owned by a British company
Eisenhower stepped in and controlled the situation (preventing a world war)
