Traditional Assessment Takes place at end of unit

Students assessed solely as individuals
Lower congition levels tested
Basic recall of facts
Can be used as an active learning tool
Must be focused on an authentic problem, case study or inquiry
Traditional research papers often simply ask students to retrieve facts and organize the information
Authentic assessment research problems probe students to utilize their research to solve a problem
Takes place throughout the duration of a unit
Uses portfolios to asses a variety of projects
Focus is on product AND process
Projects centered in real-world rather than abstract application
Assessment products can be completed in groups New Roles
Teacher takes coaching/mentor role
Student actively discovers information
Therefore students find information when they need it and thus, use it immediately Information Processing Theory Places students in the context of a problem based story
Example: Genetic Couselor
Students role play in 'fictional' situations
Students will advise 'parents' after reviewing DNA tests. Inquiry Learning Well suited for science class
