By: Johanna, Latrell, and Marc Space Race Who were the two superpowers during the cold war? Who were the historical personalities and what were their roles? Why was the launch of sputnik so historically significant toward the space race? What were the outcomes of the space race between the Cold War superpowers? The Achievements (first) of the superpowers involved in the space race The positions of the two sides of the conflict Interesting Facts The space war between U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. those were the two superpowers during the cold war. Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon during the Apollo 11mission. Neil was very famous he was a lot of things to a lot of people. The launch of sputnik was so historically significant toward the space race because it was the very first artificial satellite ever launched. The satellite a steel sphere weighed over 184 pounds 23 inches in diameter. Sputnik had been launched on an ICBM booster rocket called R-7 from Baikonur in Russia. The Soviet Union launched the first women into orbit her name was cosmonaut Valentina Teresckova flew on Vostok 6 on June 16-19, 1963. The outcome space race was the result of the treaties of SALT 1 and SALT 2 which in simple terms are the reductions of the weapons of mass destruction. The two superpowers competed for primacy in a global struggle pitting a democratic society against totalitarian communism. The Space Race began series of events. In U.S. an entire Sputnik craze broke out following the launch of the first satellite by the Soviet Union.
