Vision and Goal Setting: Creating a Personal Vision Statement

Rio Hondo College
Student Leadership Institute
2014

Dr. Walter C. Jones

A Key to Leadership
Let go of your EGO
and
Become a Good Follower
Build Positive Relationships
and
Work with Excellence
Service to Others is the highest Goal you can Reach for
The very essence of
leadership is you have a vision. It has to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet.
Rely on discipline, not emotion
One key to effective leadership is making
yourself the kind of person others want
to follow. You must become someone
others trust to take them where they want
to go. You must have vision and the ability to articulate it.
Set your sights on goals that help the world move forward
Theodore Hesburgh
The personal vision statement helps
the individual understand how their
experiences shape their goals
Create a Personal Vision Statement
The personal vision statement
focuses on three main questions and four consideration:

Considerations:

*How do I face the future (Courage)
* What will my life say about the type of
person I am (character)
* What is the value of my word (integrity)
* What do I believe (belief)
Where Have I Been?

Experiences: There are no good or bad experiences there is only experience. What have you learned? What are my Defining Moments? Who have I looked to for support?
Where am I Now?

Experiences: What am I experiencing now (positive or negative)? How do I feel about where I am? What's my motivation?
What paths do I have to choose from at the
Crossroads
Where do I want to go?
What's my vision for the
Future?
With vision, a leader is on a mission. His or her contagious spirit is felt among the crowd until others begin to rise alongside.
