The Four Different Learning Styles
AURAL
You prefer to have this slide explained to you
The written words are not as valuable as those you hear
You get the most out of a lecture
You like pages that have
emphasis on words
and
lists
You believe the meanings are within the words
Lectures are OK, but a handout is better
Your second home is the library
You need to experience things to better understand them
Ideas are only important if they sound practical, real, and relevant to you
You'd rather do the homework first, then ask questions later
What is VARK?
It's a personal assessment that helps you figure out what kind of learner you are.
Knowing what kind of learner you are will help you both in and out of the classroom.

You want the whole picture
You are often swayed by the way something looks
You are interested in color, layout, and design
You are probably going to draw something in your notes

Multimodal Learners
Individuals who combine two or more learning styles in their learning preference
Around 60% of the population
Use it to your advantage! Some multimodal learners can adapt their study methods to suit the subject at hand
What kind of learner do you think you are?

Answer each question honestly
Select ALL choices that apply to you
There are no right or wrong answers
Scoring a Paper Exam
Use the scoring chart on page three of your exam
Circle the VARK letter that corresponds to your answer choice(s) on each question
Tally the number of V's, A's, R's and K's you chose and write the total in the space provided
If one letter has a much higher score than all the others, that is your learning preference
If two or more high scores have about the same number of responses, you are multimodal in those areas
Now that you know your learning preferences, you can learn how to harness your brain power both in and out of class!
Multimodal learners: Make sure you pay
attention to each of your learning preferences.

Copy down any pictures or graphs from lecture
Highlight, underline, and box in different portions of your notes
Build flow charts
Try writing in different colors
Visualalize where the important information is located in your notes or text
Search sites like Google Images and Flickr for photos to help you study
Try to recreate your drawings from class

Aural
Learners
Lecture attendance is absolutely important
Ask your instructor if you can record their lectures
Be sure to participate in classroom discussions
You may be too busy listening to get everything down on paper; leave gaps in your notes to fill in later
Fill in the gaps in your notes; try asking a classmate if you can borrow theirs
Talk about what you've learned with others
Search YouTube and TeacherTube for songs and poems to help you study

Take very detailed notes
Include title headings, bullet lists, and definitions
Pay close attention to any handouts given
Always make sure you have your book with you in class
Reread over your notes carefully
Rewrite key points over again
Put things down in your own words
Search the web for blogs related to what you're studying
Develop acronyms and mnemonic devices

Work any examples or problems with the instructor
Try to think of a way the material relates to you
Take in all your surroundings
Participate in labs and hands-on assignments
Do as many practice problems as possible
When looking at your notes, try to remember what was going on around you when you learned this
Try role playing; put yourself in a scenario about what you've learned
Search sites like Sporcle for interactive quizzes
