The Aims of Education
'Not only do we fail to educate children along lines congruent with their natural equipment, but we insist that natural differences are so minimal that all children can profit from the education once reserved for a few.'
The Aims of Education
Educational aims that are reflective of our communities and the individual pursuit of happiness.
Educators must ask WHY are we teaching this..
'The Cardinal Principles Report', (1918) includes 7 aims to guide curriculum.
1: Health. 2: Command of fundamental processes. 3: Worthy home membership. 4:Vocation. 5: Citizenship. 6. Worthy use of leisure.
7: Ethical character.
Noddings believes that there is danger in separating responsibilities of educators. Life skills should be encompassed within the academic discourse.
Noddings believes, that as a society we need to provide continuous reflective practice.
Educational aims are a crucial part of the curriculum. Educators are faced with ever changing and evolving cultures and communities. Curriculum aims need to mirror the changes in a way that is
culturally and individually relevant.
She argues that we can not accept things as they are, without continuous and rigorous contemporary reflection.
Are we asking too much of schools?
Noddings thinks not and includes HAPPINESS as another essential principle.
'Many will fail in schools because they are forced
to do work that they hate and are deprived by work that they might love' Noddings (2003)
When we think of the 'best' for children, it has to be based on their individuality, rather that the model defined by the elite of society.
We must ask ourselves about the aims of education.
Noddings (2003) argues that the aims are embedded in national economic strength and the hope of individual financial security.
An 'Equitable' Education for All.
Are these economic factors important for the individual and the country?
What is more important?
curriculum aims, test results or exposure to traditionally labeled 'core subjects'?
Does education alleviate the pressures of life?
Noddings discusses the emphasis placed on mathematics. Those with a good result in mathematics may have an advantage in future educational roles and work prospects.
This emphasis on the 'intellectual' pursuit of mathematics, has caused educators to rally and demand equality for all student's exposure and participation in the subject.
Noddings argues that this 'equity' is not focused on individuals needs and ability. And believes that the focus should be on the opportunity to explore other areas, rather than trying to provide the same learning opportunities for all, in a rigid, antiquated and often irrelevant model of academic success.
All children will stage different performances and this so called equity, can be confused with fairness.
In order to achieve an individually tailored model of education, we need to examine the talents, passions and experiences of children.
Educational aims that are reflective of individuality, life and happiness assist educators by providing students with life long models of learning, that cater for all and are not embedded in an antiquated notion of 'best educational practice'
