Community
Little Miss Sunshine allows us to laugh at the
absurdities of family that comes together despite
considerable eccentricities
Can a family operate together dysfunctionally?
Or are all families at some level dysfunctional?
How damaging can it be
when a community holds
on to a secret?
How important is
transparency when it comes
to community?
"We have renounced the shameful
things that one hides; we refuse to
practice the cunning or to falsify God's
Word; but by the open statement of truth
we commend ourselves to the conscience
of everyone in the sight of God."
Paul--2 Cor. 4:2 (RSV)
"The sooner this shock of disillusionment comes to an individual and a to a community the better for both. A community which cannot bear and cannot survive such a crisis, which insists on keeping its illusion when it should be shattered, permanently loses, in that moment, the promise of Christian community."
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Crash's most memorable scenes argue for a
providential interconnectivity; we are never
alone in our aloneness.
"We really believe we know who we are
but we don't--not until we're tested."
Paul Haggis
"We Rwandans still refuse to call evil by its name. It is always to do with 'the other.' The Hutus will tell you a history that favors their side; the Tutsi do the same. To me we are all guilty...We need to sit around a table together--Hutu and Tutsi--and negotiate the future."
Paul Rusesabagina
Rick and Kay Warren:
Using his celebrity they have taken on the giants of spiritual lostness, corrupt leadership, global povery, illiteracy and AIDS.
Rwanda has become the focal point for Saddleback's P.E.A.C.E. plan--partnering with churches in the 2/3 world for mutual benefit
Community sometimes requires sacrificial actions, even unto death.
The American cowboy myth
Cooperation takes time and patience
What do these ensemble films teach us?
Hotel Rwanda--diplomacy and courtesy can win a whole lot of battles
United 93---choosing to go down for the sake of others
Crash--admit to our weaknesses and get beyond our delusions concering the things that separate us.
Little Miss Sunshine--all of us are a little dysfunctional--we just need to overcome that and work together
Jurgen Moltmann asserts solidarity between these victims of violence and Christ on the cross. Christ identifies God with the victims of violence and the victims with God "so that they are put under God's protection and with him are given the rights of which they have been deprived."
We remain desparate to be connected despite
repeated disappointments
Reality is not a dialectical debate between competing forces. The basis for reality is a trinity
In the trinity we see three distinct persons retaining their individual characteristics. In such a relationship, personhood is not abolished but realized. Genuine community doesn't erase differences but celebrates the gifts we bring to the conversation
2 Corinthians 13:14--Not a hierarchy
John 17:21
Mystic River teaches us that the greatest
threat to community is lack of tranparency.
We have to learn to embrace
the other....
