Just a few years ago, Wikipedia was
the barbarian in the ivory tower.
This has changed.
Pioneering teaching with Wikipedia in Korea
My 10 years of teaching with Wikipedia

What are the benefits of writing on Wikipedia?
1. Their assignment is visible and useful to
the entire world
increased motivation
service learning
2. Editing Wikipedia is fun (for some)
Wikipedia has been created by
hundred thousands volunteers
who enjoy working on the site
For students
3. Encyclopedic (factual, analytical, neutral) style
is a useful one to acquire
4. Wikipedia has high standards of quality; it does not allow other Wikipedia articles to be used as sources so students have to use non-Wikipedia, non-blog reliable sources
5. Students gain insight into knowledge creation on Wikipedia and why it is not always reliable
6. Students use real life, collaborative tool they may encounter outside classroom, giving them practical job skill to add to the CV
(MediaWiki platform, used on Wikipedia is the worlds' most popular wiki software)
For instructors
For the community
1. We receive assistance from Wikipedia volunteers
(specialized teaching assistants)
There are volunteers trained by the Wikimedia Foundations for the specific purpose of assisting educators:

the "Wikipedia Ambassador Program"
2, The ambassadors can help the instructor
and the students navigate Wikipedia,
present in class and
explain how to use various wiki tools
4. The instructor is assisted in secondary tasks
by regular Wikipedia editors:
plagiarism detection
article reviewing
engaging students in discussion

5. Wikimedia Foundations provides a Wikipedia Teaching Fellow certificate for instructors who teach with Wikipedia
From the WMF blog on the first year of the "teaching in Wikipedia" initative: "More than 800 students from 22 U.S. universities contributed about 5,600 pages of high quality content to the English Wikipedia. Articles written by those students improved by an average of 140 percent. "
How to start teaching with Wikipedia?
1. Spend an hour or so learning how to edit Wikipedia
(don't ask students to do what you are not ready to)
3. Google for "Wikipedia:Education program/Educators" and follow the instructions there

2. Start by googling for "Wikipedia Tutorial" (also available in Korean) and do it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial)

7. They start creating their digital portfolio, with articles that may impress their future employees ("I created/improved the article about your company - or competitors")
8. While working on the projects, they may form professional contacts while interacting with company PR department (for example) asking for release of certain images or texts
Teaching with Wikipedia has been endorsed by the American Sociological Association (and a number of other academic professional organizations)

Common myths

As long as you have or can add a written assignment that focuses on summarizing existing knowledge, it is a good fit
Through most assignments focus on adding written content, some assignments can use other media, such as student-created photos, maps or diagrams
This assignment has been done successfully around the world with high-school, undergrad and graduate students, including ESL (and can of course be done in non-English languages too)
3. Editing history tools allow for easy assessment of individual contributions to group assignments, and monitoring whether students meet deadlines on time
A few hours are necessary to learn the wiki, design an assignment an incorporate it into one's course
This is is supported by ready-to-use templates, case studies, peer reviewed articles, volunteers and ambassadors (including myself)
