By Cherokee grace City of Ashes Protagonist Characters Antagonist Plot Diagram Quotes from the Book. My opinion Clary Fray is one of the main protagonists of the series. She is a human, a Nephilim, assumed at first to be a mundane living a normal human life prior to the beginning of City of Bones before it is realized by Jace Lightwood that she is actually Nephilim after she easily survives a rune placed on her. Valentine Morgenstern is the antagonists of the first half of The Mortal Instruments series. He was Jocelyn Fray's husband, and with her he is the biological father of Jonathan Christopher and Clarissa Adele Morgenstern, and the adoptive father of Jace Lightwood. He was parabatai with Lucian Graymark before Lucian became a werewolf. Clary Simon Jace Alec Isabelle Luke Valentine Exposition Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution “Alec looked at her and shook his head. "How do you manage never to get mud on your clothes?"
Isabelle shrugged philosophically. "I'm pure at heart. It repels the dirt.”
- Isabelle Lightwood and Alec Lightwood “You have something on your neck.
What?
Looks like a bite mark, what were you doing out all night, anyway?
Nothing. I went walking in the park. Tried to clear my head.
And ran into a vampire
What? No! I fell.
On your neck?”
- Clary Fray and Simon Lewis “Valentine!"
"You mean father. I despise this modern habit of calling one's parents by their names."
"What I want to call you is a hell of a lot more unprintable than your name."
