Semper Elementary Field Experience Jolene Siple Day 1
On the first day we set up the computers on wheels (COWs). Two of the COW carts had older computers with battery lives that would not last long enough to act as a mobile lab. We took apart the carts to distrubute several computers to each classroom. This will allow teachers and students access to computers in their classroooms every day.

The Teacher Librarian Dodie Sale and also I looked for mentor texts to support the 1st grade team in teaching contractions. 3.1.4 Use technology and
other information
tools to organize and
display knowledge and
understanding in ways
that others can view,
use, and assess. 1.1.6 Read, view, and
listen for information
presented in any
format (e.g., textual,
visual, media, digital)
in order to make
inferences and
gather meaning. Day 2
On the second day at Semper we planned for the haunted library. Then I spent some time shelving books. The most important thing I learned was to catalog books. The recently purchased book fair books needed to be put into the catalog and they needed spine lables and barcodes. I was able to put each title into the catalog. On this particular day we did not have a lot of student contact other than to check out books to a few classes. 2.2.4 Demonstrate personal
productivity by
completing products
to express learning. Day 3
I started the day working on the book hospital. There were many different types of repairs that needed to be completed. I gluded spines, recovered picture books and taped pages.
We worked with the 1st grade teachers to find mentor texts to teach grabbers.
Some of the day was spent creating decoratins for the haunted library. Day 4
Thursday morning was spent printing spine lables for the new book fair books. The second half of the day was spent at the district library technology meeting. The meeting was a forum for district technology staff, librarians, and teachers to collaborate and plan for future district use of technology. This was very informative, teachers shared how they are using technology in their classrooms. There were also conversations about how the district can better support the use of technology in schools. 1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and
select appropriate
sources to answer
questions. 3.1.4 Use technology and
other information
tools to organize and
display knowledge and
understanding in ways
that others can view,
use, and assess. Day 5
Friday morning was spent putting the newly printed labels on the new books. These books were going to replace the halloween books currently on display. I also pulled a cart of easy books to take to the afternoon kindergarten class. They were unable to come to the library because were decorating for the halloween carnival. It was a lot of fun helping the students select books in their classroom. I was able to have conversations with the kids about their interests and help lead them to books that interested them. The second half of the day into the evening was spent "haunting" the library. 4.1.1 Read, view, and listen
for pleasure and
personal growth. Day 6
Halloween!!!!!
I started the day by running the Kids New Network (KNN). I had observed Dodie the previous week and decided that I could "produce" the live program for the second week. It was a little nerve racking at first but after the first day it went off without a hitch.
This was one of my favorite days in the library. All the classes came through to hear scarry stories. I was able to read the older kids a halloween book and we read the younger kids a book and also let them listen to a musical version of the book.
After all of the classes came through the library I continued to label and clean the easy books. 3.1.4 Use technology and
other information
tools to organize and
display knowledge and
understanding in ways
that others can view,
use, and assess. 2.3.1 Connect
understanding to
the real world. Day 7
I started the day running KNN again. The students do an amazing job of broadcasting live on a daily basis. The first class to visit the library was 4th grade. We trained them on proper use and handling of the lap tops. Each class is required to get a certificate before they are allowed to check out a COW. The remainder of the day was spent labeling and cleaning the easy books. 1.3.5 Use information
technology responsibly. 2.1.4 Use technology and
other information tools
to analyze and organize
information. 3.1.3 Use writing and
speaking skills to
communicate new
understandings
eff ectively. Day 8
I once again ran the KNN program.
Dodie and I each visited a sixth grade classroom during social studies to introduce internet research. Students were taught how to use search indicators such as AND, OR, and - on search engines. Students were able to practice to see how AND limited the results, OR added more options and - refined their searches.
After working with the 6th graders we taught a 5th grade google doc lesson on designing a web site. Students began just looking at other class sites and posting their observations on a google doc. 2.1.4 Use technology and
other information tools
to analyze and organize
information.
3.2.3 Demonstrateteamwork by workingproductively withothers.
4.2.1 Display curiosity bypursuing intereststhrough multipleresources. Day 9
I started the morning with KNN. Then two first grade walk to read classess joined us for a Book Flix of The Bear Snores on. This book was selected for first grade becasue the CAPs address rhyming words and repeating words. Students enjoyed watching the Book Flix on the SMART board. In the afternoon we each continued with our 6th grade class on research. The second day focused on finding a reliable web site. Students were required to choose 3 sites and look at them for credibility. 1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer
questions.
2.1.4 Use technology andother information toolsto analyze and organizeinformation.
3.2.3 Demonstrateteamwork by workingproductively withothers.
4.1.1 Read, view, and listenfor pleasure andpersonal growth. Day 10
I produced my last KNN broadcast. We showed the Book Flix to the other first grade walk to read group. One of the first grade classes stayed for a lesson on using shelf markers in the non- fiction section. The kids were shown how to use shelf markers on a small collection of non-fiction books. This class is working its way up to checking out books outside the easy section. The day ended with kindergarten checkout time. I checked out books to each of the classes that visited the library. 1.1.2 Use prior and background knowledge as context for new
learning.
2.3.1 Connect understanding to the real world.
3.1.1 Conclude an inquiry-based research process by sharing new understandings and refl ecting on thelearning.
4.1.1 Read, view, and listen for pleasure and personal growth. Other Important daily tasks:
The easy books or as Dodie called them the "everybody" books were in rough shape at the beginning of the year. The sticker/label method was unorganized and very sloppy. Daily I worked on relabeling the spin of each book and cleaning them.
Another daily task was shelving and checking out books.
Over several days the scholastic book fair books were cataloged, labled and displayed. Before After Book Fair Books
