Hybrid
Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
Imports led the majority of the government’s green car purchases last year, with 54 percent of the nearly 1,800 green vehicles purchased by the federal government coming from Hyundai, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Honda. The federal government’s most-purchased hybrid wasn’t a Big Three product either. Instead, it was the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.
Toyota Avalon Hybrid
On the fuel-economy front, electrified Avalons are expected to deliver 40 miles per gallon in the city and 39 on the highway, making for a combined rating of 40 mpg. Six-cylinder cars can only muster an estimated 21 city, 31 highway.
Pros
Hybrids will help you stay away from the pump for longer periods of time. The lower fuel costs will help you recoup the higher sticker price in about five years. And hybrids often come with federal and state tax credits.
Cons
Although hybrids offer superior fuel economy, they also cost significantly more than the traditional gas-powered vehicles of their size and class. If your sole incentive is to pay less in the long run, rather than the environmental perks, a hybrid might not be the choice for you.
How they work
Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) combine the benefits of gasoline engines and electric motors and can be configured to obtain different objectives, such as improved fuel economy, increased power, or additional auxiliary power for electronic devices and power tools.
