Shrek's Hero Journey
Transcript of Shrek's Hero Journey
The hero crosses the gateway that separates the ordinary world from the special world.
The hero refuses the call, usually out of fear.
Call to Adventure
Refusal of the Call
Crossing the Threshold
Shrek does not refuse the call. He wants to get his swamp back and that is what he is going to do.
Donkey is Shrek's mentor. He is a trickster who loves to joke around, but that is how he teaches Shrek, through humor.
Shrek crosses the threshold when he goes to Lord Farquaad and he tells all the knights that who ever kills Shrek gets to rescue the Princess. In the end Shrek ends up killing all the knights.

The hero's normal life before the story begins.
The hero faces tests, meets allies, confronts enemies & learns the rules of the special world.
Tests, Allies, and Enemies
Shrek is just living in his swamp, with all his necessities right there. He is a carefree ogre, with no worries.
Tests: Handling Donkey
Fighting Farquaad's knights
Rescuing Princess Fiona from the tower and dragon
Enemies: Lord Farquaad because all he wants is to marry Princess Fiona so he becomes king.
Shrek and Donkey have taken this long journey, are living off the land all to rescue the princess. He then enters the innermost cave, which in the movie is when he gets to the top of the volcano and makes his way to the tower. Crossing the bridge over the lava and passing the dragon.
The hero is now ready to obtain that which he has set out, that once he returns will benefit the society that he has left.
Shrek and donkey have finally rescued the princess and made it out of the tower, safely. At this point Shrek just wants to go home to his hopefully, fairytale creature free swamp.
Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey all travel back to the swamp.
Robin Hood and the other men try to kidnap Princess Fiona and kill Shrek.
Fiona is in rush to get married before sundown.
Shrek knows that Fiona loves him and figures that he has to save her from marrying Lord Farquaad. So Shrek crashes the wedding, grabs Fiona and finds out she is also and ogress. Shrek and Fiona have "true loves first kiss" and Fiona changes into an ogre.
Shrek and donkey have reached the tower and are about to rescue the princess. But like all good stories, there is a catch. Shrek must get past the dragon to reach Princess Fiona in the highest room of the tallest tower.
After rescuing Donkey, Shrek finds out that all the fairytale creatures have been dumped on his swamp. So Shrek leaves, to go to Lord Farquad's castle. He is then told that in order to get his swamp back, he must go rescue Princess Fiona. This is his call to adventure.
Meeting the Mentor
The hero meets the mentor to gain confidence, advice or training to face the adventure.
