Developing Student Writing Samples Writing is the process of making meaning out of text. All children are different and develop their writing skills at their own pace. These four samples of writing should help you to gauge where your child is in their writing development. Your child:
- shows some knowledge of the alphabet
- knows that marks on a page carry meaning
-relies on pictures to tell the message
- doesn't yet understand how to communicate through written word Basic Your child:
- shows awareness of letter-sound relationship
-usually spells a word with the correct first letter
-often uses one or more letters to represent a word
-writes from left-to-right and top-to-bottom
-uses uppercase and lowercase letters randomly
-uses some word spacing
-uses and spells correctly some of their sight words Proficient Your child:
- spells with more sound-letter relationships
-uses more beginning, middle, and end sounds
-mostly spells their sight words correctly
-more regularly uses uppercase and lowercase letters, but sometimes still shows some mixing
-writes from left-to-right Outstanding Your child:
- spells with more sound-letter relationships
-uses more beginning, middle, and end sounds
-mostly spells their sight words correctly
-more regularly uses uppercase and lowercase letters, but sometimes still shows some mixing
-writes from left-to-right
