Historical Background
Before Elizabeth I.:
Plays were given in public
Companies very small and moblie
They consisted of 5-8 player
During the Elizabethan era:
new laws had to be passed
--> actors without support of a member of the highest rank were criminals
the companies were settled in London
increasingly rejected the restrictions of slavishly following classic models and began to write tragedies and comedies in much looser and relaxed style
Licensing of plays
Control of companies --> soon problem
Actors were said to be vagabonds
needed licenses to travel around England
--> movement was regulated
General Information
innovation in the social life
took the general fancy
there were many companies of amateur and professional players
companies were kept at baronial estates
there were private and public theatres in London

Scenery
minimalism
usually props remained on the stage
Effects
as the result of costumes, art and skill
death was a challenge
theatres completely lacked lightning effects
