2012 CES

1) In 2011 everything became "smart." Smart today means either 'connected' or some market opportunity in the future. Smart in 2012+ will have a greater focus on machine-to-machine communication and intelligent recommendations

2) Gesture control - a building trending for several years at CES - will be everywhere at the 2012 CES.

3) Over the last decade we've seen the focus on TVs move from HD (1996-2004) to Big HD (2004-2008) to Thin, Big HD (2009-2011). The next focus is on near-invisible bezels. Price declines for TVs have made a wall of panels closer to reality. 2012 CES will focus on walls of panels designed for home settings.

2012 CES

4) The entire app ecosystem will be bigger in 2012 (not a difficult prediction - it was bigger & better than ever in 2011 and the 2012 iLoung Pavilion sold out in under 2 hours - all 50K sqft).

5) Content discovery will be a key theme in 2012 - building on smart devices well positioned to provide recommendations

6) Audio will be the strongest it has been in years. (we're already seeing a glimpse of this and 2011 will help cement it).

2012 CES

7) in 2012, 'smart' will provide a set of compelling services and offerings on the device best appointed for that given activity. Services like twitter & facebook that easily convey a connected platform but are not best positioned for the large screen will move off the TV to the phone or tablet. InteractiveTV will also move to the handheld device and there will be greater exploration of tying multiple devices together during simultaneous media consumption.

Services

1) Cloud services: RealNetworks Unifi cloud service enables users to keep track of music, photos, and videos stored on multiple

2) Content aggregators: Fuugo

3) Service integration: Viewsonic TV with Boxee inside

Automative

1) Ford announces Focus Electric. First car launch at CES (days before Detroit AutoShow)

2) voice-to-text and text-to-voice across CES (Toyota's Entune Telematics, OnStar/Verizon aftermarket review mirror), DriveNTalk BHF-2000, Pioneer, garmin Nuvi2400)

3) integrated services (Parrot Asteroid, JVC, Audi MMI Touch)

Gaming

1) Razer Switchblade: 7in multitouch display. layer of adjustable, tactile keys brings PC, customizable gaming to the handheld

2) Nintendo 3DS

3) Fling Joystick bringing physical gaming to touchscreens

4) Vizio: Via plus HDTV, VIA Tablet, and VIA Phone integrate OnLive streaming gaming.

Digital Imaging

1) maturing category driving increased features around the edges

2) Incorporation of pico projectors (Sony Handcam HDR-PJ)

2) Samsung WiFi-enabled SH100 - paired with smartphone that can act as remote viewfinder and trigger

3) Eye-Fi: added direct mode which enables users to move content directly to eye-fi enabled tablets/phones/computers

Some Examples

Parrot Ar.Drone

News from CES

1) apps are not new to CES, but coexistence and reliance on hardware (and vise-versa is new)

2) 2011 CES highlighted apps that require hardware and hardware that require apps

Implications

1) hardware is increasingly relying on ecosystem of app-enabled devices (smartphones, media players, tablets)

2) "connected" devices will become increasingly connected as hardware taps into app environment

Samsung SH100

Asus Slider

e-Reader sales will hit 19M in 2011

News from CES

1) Tablets were the most vocalized story at the 2011 CES

2) 100+ tablets on display at the 2011 CES

3) Details still sparce for many - launch dates, price, WiFi/cellular options

portability different than pocketability.

tablet sales will double in 2011 to 29M-35M Worldwide

iGrill

AutoBot

Moto Xoom

Implications

1) 50M+ total e-Readers + Tablets in 2011

2)differentiation will be key with 100+ launches

  • form factor (screen size)
  • OS
  • Pricing

3) use-case scenarios (still) being defined

4) watch the integration of Sensing technologies (accelerometers, cameras, etc)

5) close cousins (e-Readers): adding color, games, etc. Tablets in disguise position for the same market?

6) watch screen technologies (Mirasol, Pixel Qi)

consistent with our early calls, 2011 CES saw more than 100+ tablet launches

Nearly 40% of early buyers bought their tablets to use at work.

Toshiba's autosteroscopic displays

Sony's 3D Bloggie

Some Examples

3DTV growth next year defined by trend with drift. Upswing in 2012 or possibly pushed to 2013 as technology becomes more common feature.

Nike+SportWatch

News From CES

1) 3D still a major theme at CES

2) passive 3D on polarized screens had a Strong Showing and Autostereoscopic looks more viable as a home entertainment technology (4Kx2K displays)

3) as predicted, 3D went well beyond TVs to include cameras, portable BD players, monitors, laptops, & future concepts

Implications

1) 3D accepting more natural role as feature of larger offering (TV, camera, laptop, etc)

2) OEMs address early hurdles to 3D adoption through CES releases: glasses (polarized/autostereoscopic displays), content (digital cameras and camcorders), etc.

3) New launches show we are still early in the adoption cycle and resources are still being dedicated to 3D feature role out.

LG Smart HOM-BOT

news from CES

1) 171M+ Connected Devices sold in 2010

2) The Internet of Things is empowering The Intelligence of Things (made possible by GPS, connectivity services like bluetooth and the Internet, and computing power

3) major push to make everything "smart"

Implications

1) The Internet of Things is empowering the Intelligence of Things

3)Machine-to-Machine Communication begets Machine-to-Machine decision-making

4) Creation and Capture of Data (often leveraging the 'sensor'ization of tech)

Implications

1) the Motorola Atrix with client-lite dock showed that the evolution in phones to jumbophones doesn't necessarily need to take place if the device can scale across different screen sizes easily through the use of accessories and add-ons

2) cellular connected devices beyond the mobile phone highlight the direction toward multi-device connectivity

News From CES

1) JumboPhones take center stage (4.3in+ screens): large real estate new normal

2) some blurring between phones & tablets and phones & computers.

3) strong focus on 4G from OEMs & carriers

4) focus on specs - moving towards SuperPhones

ie Motorola Atrix: Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 4-inch qHD display, 16GB of built in memory (expandable to 32GB), 1930 mAh battery (up to 9 hours of talk time)
