By Audrey, Shannon,Casey, and Makaila
The kingdom of Gao was the last major empire of western Sudan to form. Although the city of Gao had been occupied by a Songhai dynasty prior to being conquered by Mansa Musa's forces, it was not until later that the Songhai empire was formed.
Political, social, cultural, and economic interactions
All of these subjects have one common influence, the leader. Some of the important leaders of Songhai were Sunni Ali and Askia Muhammad. Both of them were Islamic and followed strict muslim law and that is also how they ruled Songhai. Sunni was a great military leader, he ruled from 1464-1492. His army conquered Timbuktu and Jenne. Jenne was a popular trade site, and once Songhai conquered Jenne they controlled most if not all of the trade in West Africa. Askia or Aslia the Great ruled Songhai when it was at its largest. He encouraged the spread of Islam.
the power of Songhai depleated after he died.
The Songhai Empire raised above all other empires with its technology. They had many advancements such as canoes, calvary, protective armor, and iron tipped weapons. With these advancements the Songhai Empire built new mosques, conquered new land, and were able to educate the empire. By conquering new land they made their empire the largest in African history. By creating new technology the Songhai Empire improved their education, religion, land, and living abilities.
