Places that were Communist at One Point
Russia: Everyone Freaks Out in 1917
-Wartime shortages during WWI
-Weak/Unpopular Tsar (Remember Russian history of brutal leaders)
-Enter Vladimir Lenin, hardline communist. Revolution. Civil War. Communism.
Story: The Russian Revolution
Lenin and the Bolsheviks
-Lenin's Bolshevik party (communists) seize power in 1917. Kill Romanovs.
-Want to end war, give workers control of factorizes, dive non-Russians "national determination". PEACE, LAND, BREAD
-Manage to win Russian Civil War against everyone. By 1921, their power is complete. Rename Russia "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" (USSR/Soviet Union)
Fast Forward: WWII
-Stalin comes to power after Lenin in 1924, leading purges of enemies. Millions killed.
-Beat Hitler in WWII. Form "satellite" communist states in Eastern Europe.
China: What's Been Going On There?
-Crappy Qing dynasty collapses in 1912. "Republic" takes over, led by nationalist Chiang Kai-shek. (Geomindang)
-Major problems: Foreign investment, conflicts over land ownership (wealthy landowners vs poor peasants)
-Small communist party under Mao Zedong grows in popularity.
-More rights for women (divorce, right to vote, own property)
-Supported poor peasants in conflicts against landlords. Reduce rents, taxes, developed literacy programs.
-Slowly, communists begin to peel away rural areas from Chiang Kai-shek's control. "Chinese Civil War" begins in 1927.
What's the difference between "socialism" and "communism"?
-When Japanese invade China, communists fight bravely against them while Nationalists are idle.
-After WWII, Chinese see communists as true protectors. (Counter foreign power + land problems)
-By 1949, nationalists are kicked out of China, fleeing to Taiwan.
