christmas traditions - Portugal
Transcript of christmas traditions - Portugal
The Nativity scene is the traditional Christmas decoration in Portugal, and most families have a small one with just the holy family, animals, the wise men, shepherds, farmers..etc. Christmas trees are also common now, but weren't until the 1970's.
On Christmas eve, most families gather around the Christmas tree and the nativity scene to celebrate the birth of Jesus (The Nativity Scene is a very important part of the celebration).
After they eat, people go to church for the 'Missa do galo' or 'mass of the rooster' service. Some families have two present opening times with children being allowed to open a few gifts after midnight mass and most of them in the morning. People that don't go to a midnight service will put the gifts under the tree and the family will open the gifts when they wake up
