Transcript of US Gun Control Presentation

We have decided to focus our presentation on the gun laws debate which is currently in progress in the US and has been for the past six months. We have chosen this issue as it relates to both Crime & Deviance and Politics & Power.
This issue has sparked many debates between Conservative and Liberals. As a result, news and media sources have been known to manipulate and exaggerate in their favor.
We have decided to research the following two US media sources; 'The Huffington Post' (Left Wing) and 'Fox News' (Right Wing). These two sources have very different opinions regarding this issue.
Left-wing thinkers, or 'Liberals' generally feel gun control is the answer; as they feel firearms do more harm than good. On the other hand right-wing thinkers or 'Conservatives' are more traditional and they believe they are protected by the second amendment of the constitution; a typical Conservative argument is 'Guns don't kill people, people do'.
How has US media manipulated the current gun control issue?
Fox news are widely renowned for provided bias news in terms of advocating the traditional gun laws and values. Despite the accusations and public uproar; Fox are adamant that their news is 'fair' and 'non-bias' in terms of their portrayal of the gun control issues.
A quotation from a Fox News article reads: 'The sad part is most people think if you're pro-gun, that you've got this gunslinger attitude, that you are walking around looking for a gun fight to get into and that is so far from the truth,' - Blackford, a former Secret Service agent.
The Huffington Post (although based in the UK) cover world news. They are not fully anti-gun but they feel more magazine limitations and backgrounds checks would be a sufficient solution.
The NRA
The NRA (National Rifle Association) are extremely pro-gun. They feel and believe the constitution allows the American public to carry weapons without concern. A spokesperson said: 'A gun is only a weapon when a human being is holding it. But so is anything else when there is an intention to kill'.
Marxist Perspective
Karl Marx wrote that civilians should have the right to bear arms for the unlikely event of needing protection from the government. “… the workers must be armed and organized. The whole proletariat must be armed at once with muskets, rifles, cannon and ammunition… Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary. ” – Karl Marx
Functionalist Perspective
Functionalists believe that the amount of power in society can either increase or decrease depending on the number of people who view it as legitimate. (variable sum model) i.e. if the American population didn't believe their government were making the correct decisions, under the second amendment they could form a militia and take down the government.
A twitter user - "#NameSomethingDemocratsAreGoodAt. Claiming the country needs more gun control while ignoring chicago"
Social Media Opinions
UCLA professor - "Gun Control can't stop a madman.. "
And neither can the police which is why all citizens have (should have) the right of self defense. - A twitter user in response.
Snoop Dog - "End negativity, move forward in peace and love with #NoGunsAllowed"

Our Opinions
If people have the intention to kill, then they will kill; regardless as to whether they have access to a firearm or not.
Many Americans enjoy firearms in a recreational way and they may have no intention to cause harm at all.
Firearms are designed to defend and should only be used in retaliation.
