What is a Smartphone?
A smartphone is a mobile phone handset with advanced hardware and software capabilities that enable it to perform complex functions similar to those of laptop computers.
2.7 billion people – almost 40% of the world’s population – are online (Of them 2.1 billion using Mobile-broadband in 2013).
By 2012, smartphone ownership accounted for 76% of all mobile-phone handsets in Australia.

Ushahidi is map platform created in 2007 and deployed in locations such as Kenya, Mexico, Afghanistan, and Haiti. It leverages Web 2.0 technologies to integrate data from multiple sources smartphones, Web applications, email, and social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook to provide an up-to-date, publicly available crisis map that is in turn available to relief organizations.
