Children of the City
Victor: 8 yr old boy who lost his father and was abandoned by her mother. His uncle recruited him as a newspaper boy . Since then Victor have taken life on the streets.
Victor’s father: A hardworking man of the family who was a loving father to Victor. His death caused the boy to fall in grave pain.
Victor’s mother: She loved her husband so much but never loved her son as much. When her husband died, she abandoned Victor for another man.
Tiyo Pedring: Victor’s uncle. He took care of Victor after the boy was abandoned by his mother. He made Victor a newspaper boy.
Nacio: Also a newspaper boy. He became a close friend of Victor after he taught him the ways of selling newspapers. Even though he was full of vices, Victor treasured him much and took his death as a huge loss.
Because of unjust salaries and compensations during the late 1980’s, the father of the boy Victor got involved in a company strike. However, he never wanted his son to know nothing about it. He takes Victor’s mind off vices and promises Victor a bright future some day. Unfortunately, one day, during a strike his father met his death when he was shot by the police officers managing the chaos. Victor was shocked to know the sudden death of his father on a newspaper. He and his mother fell in deep misery and pain upon hearing his father’s death. Soon, the mother became negligent of Victor. And eventually, she found a new husband, which Victor didn’t like at all. And as often as possible, he tries to stay out of his mother and her lover’s way. Until one day, Victor’s mother left with her lover. And it was his Uncle Pedring who took care of him since then. He recruits Victor to a newspaper job. However, the man does not treat Victor well unless he brings home money.
Describe the character development of Victor-from an earnest newsboy to "to one of the boys" - and relate this to the moral point of the story.
How does the city shape the newsboys, child workers, beggars, orphans, who ply the city for a living?
Relate this story to other naturalistic depiction of Manila-as the jungle-for instance, in films like "Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag" and "City after Dark". Describe the details evoked to bring out this impression.
The last paragraph presents the city of Manila as metaphor for a moral universe of contemporary Filipino life. What ironies were used to present Victor becoming a prey in a jungle called survival?

On the streets, Victor met children who were just like him. He then met, Nacio, also a newspaper boy. He taught Victor various tricks in newspaper selling. Soon, they became the best of friends. Victor’s job grew prosperous. Soon, his “Boss” starts to trust him with a ration of 20 papers a day. He becomes contented with his life until Nacio met a terrible accident. He was run over by a car and met his death. Victor grieved for his friend just like the way he did with his father. Since then, Viktor gets beaten up by other kids. His colleagues hurt him whenever he refuses to smoke or say curse words or refuses to follow what they tell him. Victor was defiant at first. But after long, tired of being tossed around like a stray dog, Victor finally gave up.
