Transcript of The Effects of Food Waste on the Environment

"Food Waste" refers to the removal of food from the food supply chain which is fit for consumption, or which are spoiled or expired, mainly from economic behavior, poor stock management, or neglect.
How Much is Thrown Away?
The UK throws away the equivalent of
3,000,000 slices of cheese a day.
The US throws away the equivalent of 20 pounds of food per person per month.
Land Usage
Crops that become wasted food occupy 1.4 billion hectares of land, about 30% of the world's agricultural land area.
If we stopped throwing food away, we could save the equivalent of at least 17 million tons of carbon dioxide, the same as taking one of four cars off the road.
Greenhouse Gases
Produced but uneaten food generates 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gases, making it the third greatest emitter after the US and China
Sink Disposal
Some people think that using the sink disposal instead of throwing their food in the trash will stop the food from affecting the environment
the water has to be treated to remove the food particles.
Water Usage
Wasted food consumes 250 km³ of surface and groundwater.
