http://www.acuityforschool.com/pdfs/formativewhitepaper_brochures.pdf There are many studies that show web-based assessment has positive results. Many of these studies show the advantages of online assessment over the traditional assessment.
One study found three advantages of online assessments such as quizzes. 1) Students can take the assessment anytime. 2) They can take it repeatedly. 3)It can provide instant feedback.
(Zakrzewski & Bull, 1999) Formative assessments should be designed to engage student attention, enhance learning effectiveness, and have students become committed to self evaluation. It is a proven fact that web based formative assessments improve student learning and their interest in their scores. This type of formative assessment allows them to assess their own progress and understanding. Some examples of the use of technology in formative assessments are, online quizzes, smartboard applications, clicker systems, online polls, twitter or facebook questions, and many more. Below is an image I found that had many different programs teachers are using for formative assessments.

Members of the class will discuss how using technology for both formative and summative assessment helps improve student achievement by allowing teachers to collect diagnostic data, provide timely feedback, and allow student interaction. Technology supports
toward the design of more balanced sets of coherent, nested summative assessments that operate across levels of educational systems.
(Pellegrino & Quellmalz, 2011, p. 132) Technology can also support the design of complex, interactive tasks that extend the range of knowledge,
skills, and cognitive processes that can show us what they know and how they know it. Some examples of the use of technology for summative assessments are the Classroom Performance System (or clickers), podcasts, student created PowerPoint games, and the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Test . Web-based assessments use powerful scoring, collect rich diagnostic data and provide timely feedback.
These types of assessments can be quite substantial, but technology makes them feasaible.
