Early life Some say this woman was born in 1788 while others claim 1787 or 1786. Daughter of a Shoshone chief. The expedition After the expedition In 1804, an expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark entered the area. The plan was to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. Despite traveling with a newborn child, Sacagawea proved to be helpful in many ways. Sacagawea also made a miraculous discovery of her own. Fort Clatsop Once Sacagawea left the expedition, the details of her
life become more elusive. Over the years, tributes to Sacagawea and her contribution to the Corps of Discovery have come in many forms. Charbonneau's mistake “Having such a rattle, I gave it to him. Whether this medicine was the cause or not, she had not taken it 10 minutes before the baby was born.”
