Why do we need the data?
animal species abundance estimates
Capture Hierarchy
capture
Why do we need software?
survey can generate thousands of media records
What is a capture-recapture survey?
records occurrences of animal species in a defined area
Portable software for capture-recapture surveys
Richard Smedley
Erik Terdal, Ph.D.

Broken Arrow, OK

tracks repeated instances (recapture) of same individuals
these need to be organized in "captures"
(groupings of media records)
captures have associated data like weather conditions, sun/moon rise and set, body type of animal, etc.
formatting and exporting data for statistical analysis
species richness estimates (# of species)
species distribution estimates

Isn't there existing software?
Yes, but none have a rich feature set
don't allow more than two cameras
don't handle multiple media types like audio, video and arbitrary datasets
not portable -- only runs on the Windows OS
supports only one database backend -- MS Access
How does Snoopy solve these problems?
allows as many media capture recorders as desired as well as multiple recorder and media types
written in Java -- runs on virtually any OS
supports any ODBC compliant database
limited auxillary data included with captures
includes standard environmental data for sun, moon and weather
temporal "bucket" of data
geographic region
defined areas containing media/data recorders

Questions?
What's next?
add image recognition to ignore backgrounds and/or animal individual pattern matching
add GIS features

Click on capture assembles media into captures
In addition to moon and sun information
Can also import daily weather averages
