Introduction
There are several consisting factors that affect inbound and domestic tourism in the UK today, however, the 3 most prominent factors consist of, competition from other destinations, climate and the emergence of new markets.
Competition from other destinations
Tourism in the UK can be affected by competition from other destinations. The numbers visiting countries that aren't usually seen as common holiday destinations have started to rise thus impacting on the UK's inbound and domestic tourism; unique holiday destinations are beginning to be seen as more appealing, in which the usual destinations such as the UK, Spain, France etc. are lacking in visiting numbers. Switzerland, Germany and Austria are currently leading the world in terms of travel and tourism competitiveness, the UK has made it into the top ten also. (worldeconomicforum) The table highlights how the UK is succeeding to a certain extent in attracting tourism. However, the table also adds to the point made how different destinations are creeping up, such as Switzerland and Austria. In addition, Britain will have to try different methods when trying to attract more tourists.

Climate
The British climate isn't the best, however, our climate is forever changing and it seems to be getting warmer. As a result of a warmer climate, Britain will succeed in gaining more tourism both inbound and domestic.

The guardian explains that 'european tourists are flocking to Britain to escape scorching weathers' Research from the guardian currently show that European tourists choose to holiday in Britain as their countries are becoming too hot. By gaining more tourism will have a huge impact on the UK's tourism and economy as more tourists will be holidaying here therefore spending their money here.
Global Tourism
Competition is rising from a range of countries. Competition is beneficial for every country as without it they will not maintain a good standard of quality and all services.

Britain is well known for its historical values as is France and Italy. Therefore, we need to know what attracts people to Britain over France and Italy.

Although France and Italy maintain a good climate, normally a lot better than Britain's climate, facts and figures reveal that not many of the inbound tourists are too bothered about the weather. On a scale of 1 to 7, Britain scored a 2.76 on people strongly disagreeing with poor weather being a deterring act (VisitBritain) thus highlighting that although France and Italy do have sunshine, inbound tourists aren't interested. This is a positive aspect for Britain as it is a means of more inbound tourism.

Many British tourists choose Mediterranean holidays over Britain, this is due to the warmer climate and guaranteed sunshine.

However, a change in climate can deter tourism. Changes in climate lead to holiday destinations such as the Maldives suffering as changes in the climate lead to sea levels to rise which will result in large areas of the land to be lost, estimated to happen in the next 20-50 years. Changes in today's climate will have a massive impact upon destinations as such, as they rely heavily on their coral beaches as the dominant attraction. (climate change and tourism- cru.uea.ac.uk) Ultimately, changes can lead to loss of tourism numbers, however, it could lead to a positive impact upon British tourism as tourists will begin to look at other destinations. This would be Britain's chance to attract a wider number of tourists.
The UK saw a huge drop in tourism after the 2012 olympic period, a 60% drop as stated in the BBC news, thus indicating that the weather has a massive impact upon domestic tourism as although there is evidence that tourists (inbound) do not consider the British weather as a negative aspect, other types of tourism, especially domestic, see the poor and unpredictable weather as something of a deterrent. Britain looses out to destinations such as the Mediterranean every year purely on a basis of poor climate.
Temperatures in the UK have risen
by about one degree
since the 1970s.
Conversely, the models
suggest that the UK could
experience warmer,
drier summers in the future.
As stated in The Guardian ( October 2013)

The emergence of new markets is beneficial for Britain, emergence of new markets means place such as Asia and the Middle East are fast growing markets and are willing to visit Britain and spend a lot more than what normal (european) visitors would spend. The chinese in particular are the biggest spenders, Britain would benefit from encouraging newer markets to visit Britain as they are more likely to spend their money due to the UK's ability to offer different things.
It was estimated that by 2014 visitor numbers from China alone would increase by almost 100,000 - a 90% jump’(BBC News). This will have a huge impact upon Britain's tourism industry and economy overall, more tourism equals better economy.
Recent growth has been fuelled by international shoppers from China and south-east Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand.
The World Tourism Organisation has reported that the number of Chinese tourists travelling abroad increased from 10 million in 2000 to 83 million in 2012. About half of them spend more than £3,000 a trip and account for 25% of sales of luxury goods.

The information indicates that new emerging markets (Asia) spend more of their money in countries such as Britain, ultimately impacting Britain hugely.
