"Can" = ABILITY
I [have the ability to] spend the money on a car, (but that doesn't necessarily mean I will).
Modality = the mode in which

What does "can" mean when
added to the sentence?
I can spend the money on a car.
-"Can I go to the bathroom?"
-"I don't know, can you?"
Various meanings modal auxiliaries add to verbs:
Obligation - Something one is bound to; a duty; a responsibility; no choice in the matter.
I must clean my room.
I [have to] clean my room.
I [have no choice but to] clean my room.
Advice - a recommendation regarding a decision.
