Ohio Revised Code, Ohio's Hazing Law: Section 2903.31
(A) As used in this section, “hazing” means doing any
another, including the victim, to do any act of initiation into any student or other organization that causes or creates a
substantial risk of causing mental or physical harm to any person
No person shall recklessly participate in the hazing of another.
(2) No administrator, employee, or faculty member of any primary, secondary, or post-secondary school or of any other educational institution, public or private, shall recklessly permit the hazing of any person.
(C) Whoever violates this section is guilty of hazing, a misdemeanor of the fourth degree.

Office of Student Life
Under the Ohio State Code of Student Conduct, hazing constitutes “doing, requiring or encouraging any act, whether or not the act is voluntarily agreed upon, in conjunction with initiation or continued membership or participation in any group, that causes or creates a substantial risk of causing mental or physical harm or humiliation. Such acts may include, but are not limited to, use of alcohol, creation of excessive fatigue, and paddling, punching or kicking in any form.”

Hazing may also constitute additional behaviors, including but not limited to:

forced cleaning
running errands/menial tasks
forced interviews
scavenger hunts
mental and/or psychological abuse
public or private displays of humiliation
forced use of alcohol or drugs
providing alcohol to minors
use of alcohol or drugs during the new member education/intake process or other membership events
forced eating or drinking of items
being yelled at or cursed at by other members of the team or group
sleep deprivation
public nudity
forced wear of embarrassing clothing
depriving you of regular hygiene practices (brushing teeth, bathing)
making you steal or destroy property
"drop-offs" or "dumps" in unfamiliar locations
lock-ups or being confined to small spaces
being duct taped or some other physical restraints
sexual assault
creation of excessive fatigue
any activity which seriously endangers the health or safety of another individual.
Individual Consequences for Hazing
Criminal Offense
Civil Proceeding
University Student Conduct
Organization Headquarters
Jail sentence or fine.
Retribution costs for harm/medical bills
Suspended/expelled from the university
Suspended/expelled from your organization
There are organizations who have been found in violation of hazing laws and policies on Ohio State's campus. These organizations must petition to the university and Office of Student Life
to return to campus.
Hazing is never worth it!

What can you do to help??
know the signs of alcohol poisoning
call a medical professional -- call 911!
do not leave the person in need alone

According to Ohio law, you will not get in trouble for calling for help in situations like these! Make the call that could save a life.

What is it? Why do I care? What can I do?
A voluntary, sober, imaginative, enthusiastic, creative, wanted, informed, mutual, honest, and verbal agreement
An active agreement. The absence of "no" does not mean "yes"
Not coerced
A process, which must be asked for every step of the way. If you want to move to the next level of sexual intimacy, just ask!
Never implied and cannot be assumed, even in the context of a relationship. Just because you are in a relationship does not mean that you have permission to have sex with your partner.
Consent is....
(No matter what he or she might verbalize):
The person is severely intoxicated or unconscious as a result of alcohol or drugs
The person is physically or developmentally disabled
Once a person says "no." It doesn't matter if sexual behavior has happened in the past, or what kind of activity has occured in the current event, earlier that day, or daily for the past six months. It does not matter if it is a current long-term relationship, a broken relationship, or marriage. If one partner says, "no," and the other forces penetration, it is rape.
The victim is under the age 13 or is elderly
If consent is not obtained prior to each act of sexual behavior (from kissing to intercourse), it is not consensual sex.
Circumstances in which a person CANNOT legally give consent:
Asking for and obtaining consent...
Shows that you have respect for both yourself and your partner
Enhances communication, respect, and honesty, which make sex and relationships better
Gives the ability to know and communicate about the type of sexual relationship you want
Aids in protecting yourself and your partner against STIs and pregnancy
Provides the opportunity to acknowledge that you and your partner(s) have sexual needs and desires
Allows for you to identify personal beliefs and values and respect your partner's personal beliefs and values
Builds confidence and self-esteem
Promotes positive views on sex and sexuality
Is empowering
Eliminates the entitlement that one partner might feel over another
Challenges stereotypes that rape is a women's issue
Challenges sexism and traditional views on gender and sexuality

How do you know if your
partner has given consent???
The only way to know for sure if someone has given consent is if they tell you. One of the best ways to determine if someone is uncomfortable with any situation, especially with a sexual one, is to simply ask.

Here are some examples of the questions you might ask:
Is there anything you don't want to do?
Are you comfortable?
Do you want to stop?
Do you want to go further?

You have the right to stop, slow things down
and progress at your level of comfort.

What are some non-verbal signs to give? Verbal?
RESPECT yourself and your partner.
Notice the event.
There are many events that are obvious where someone should intervene. There are many more events where there is a gray area, and are not as obvious.
Interpret the event as a problem.
If you don't see the event as a problem, there is no need for you to dedicate attention to it. "Anything that allows you to minimize the significance of a problem will foster bystander behavior. This is the world of reasons, excuses, explanations, and rationalizations we use to let us 'off of the hook' for dealing with a problem."

If I don't go to the event, then I can't be responsible for what happens. [TGs, pre-games, etc.]

If they say they aren't serving alcohol to minors, and I don't check for myself, then I have to believe they aren.t'

If I didn't know, how can I be responsible for those actions?

Direct confrontations is an option. But it isn't the only option.
