Ensure that you get at least 6-8 hours of sleep the night before the test and that you eat a healthy breakfast.

Come prepared by having adequate resource materials ( pens, pencil, etc)

Arrive at the examination venue early; this will give you time to relax and get yourself settled both physically and mentally.

Ensure that you read all instructions carefully; students have lost marks because they simply did not stop to read and follow instructions.

Preview all questions before starting; this will help you in deciding how you will strategically allocate your time to get the best results.

Ensure that there is adequate lighting
Examinations are a fact of life for any student; whether you are in high school, about to go to college or you are thinking about pursuing more CXC or CAPE subjects; tests are unavoidable.

A critical aspect of improving your test scores is using effective
test taking strategies -
methods or ways in which you approach a test that are not necessarily knowledge related.

Before the test however, you need to ensure that you are adequately

prepared
.
A significant aspect of preparation includes studying.

GETTING MOTIVATED
Set achievable, short-term goals. Looking at the Big PICTURE can sometimes become too stressful. Short-term goals are like checks ; they can confirm that we are making efforts and moving forward to our long-term goals. (for e.g., during this study session you will cover at least 2 topics).

Reward yourself (Rewards help to increase motivation and provides short-term satisfaction).
Finding it difficult to get motivated?
GETTING MOTIVATED
Find study partners who can provide you with added motivation. This is a good way to test your
knowledge;provides you with
multiple perspectives.

Develop a schedule; post it around your your immediate surroundings as a daily reminder


GETTING MOTIVATED
Refrain from engaging in negative self thoughts; thinking that you do not have the ability to achieve.
Minimal/ no distractions
Noise level should be acceptable
Not too far or too difficult to get to the location
Have adequate resources (WI-FI, books, electricity )
Temperature should not be too hot or too cold
TIME MANAGEMENT
1. Ensure that you develop a schedule
- Schedule activities that are fixed (going to school,
work, clubs etc.)
- Account for essential activities such as eating,
sleeping, getting dressed, transportation time, etc.
- Personal time (socializing, recreational activities etc).
- Study time (ensure that you indicate how many
hours are allotted to specific subjects).
2. Keep handouts and test papers organized in a binder
or folder; use dividers to separate subject notes.

Review new material on the same day it is taught, if possible.
Highlight key information when reading; make notes of important points and develop study aids.
Develop a healthy study habit; schedule time each day or week to study each topic rather than waiting until the last minute.
"Mind- dumping" - When you receive permission to start writing, make a note of key facts, formulae, etc. that you do not want to forget in the exam.

Work on the "easiest section" first; know your strengths and work accordingly.

Make a note of questions to which you may want to return; ensure that it can be easily seen.

Ensure that you answer all (the) questions where this is required.

Read over and check your answers before submitting your script. This may seem impossible (time constraints) but careless mistakes can be realized here.
Ensure that you read each question/statement carefully.

Try to think about possible answers before looking
at the options provided.

Now look at all the options that have been provided; ensure that you look for key "qualifying word"- words that can make the statement wrong or right, e.g.,
- all of the above, none of the above, except, more than, equal to, etc.

Through a process of elimination, cross out the answers you know are incorrect
Ensure that you read the questions carefully, highlight and underline key phrases or words: (compare and contrast, similarities and differences, impact)
Define:
Explain the meaning of a term/ word or idea
Compare:
Identify and explain the similarities or commonalities between two concepts or ideas
Contrast:
Highlight the differences between two concepts or
ideas.
Evaluate:
Determine the merit or worth of an argument
Explain:
Tell you Why, How, What, Who and When
To what extend
- Explore the case for the stance taken

Before you start to write, brainstorm key points and ideas about which you want to write, then develop an outline. This will help you in organizing your answer.

Use the standard essay or short answer format (introduction, body, conclusion). Start with the easiest question first; this will provide you with the confidence to 'tackle' more difficult questions.

Ensure that you use the appropriate vocabulary (jargon and terms associated with the subject)
Write legibly; if the teacher is unable to read and understand what you have written, it will reflect in your grades.

Use the space provided as an indication of how much you should write.

If time is about to run out and you have not completed the question, start listing points that you would have highlighted in your answer.

Proof-read for errors (grammatical, punctuation, etc). Even if you are not sitting an English exam, it is important that you follow the basic principles of grammar and mechanics.
TRUE AND FALSE QUESTIONS
ESSAY/ SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS

Look for the "false" part of the statement. To trick students, teachers generally falsify what would be an otherwise true statement; so look before you leap.

Negative words or prefixes can change the meaning of the statement -
un
important,
dis
agree,
pre
test,
in
definite; Double negatives = positive; e.g.
"not uncommon"


TRUE AND FALSE QUESTIONS
Pay special attention to statements that provide a reason
in the statement. The justification given may be untrue
or incomplete.

Look for absolute or qualifying words. Absolute words
are used, sometimes, to make a statement "false" while
qualifiers tend to be "true".
Absolutes
- all of the above,
always, none of the above;
Qualifiers
- often, many, most,
the majority.

OPEN BOOK TEST
As with all exams, ensure that you familiarize yourself with the content of the book by reading key information.

Develop an index detailing the page number that makes reference to key information.

Re-framing Negative Thoughts - whenever you think of something negative; try to find the positive in every situation
COLLABORATIVE
OPEN BOOK TEST
Develop a listing of key vocabulary terms and their meanings using index cards.

Write important notes or comments in book margins to serve as reference points during tests.

Only use quotations to support your points; do not make them the "main star of the show".


Do not copy large pieces of information and present it as your words; rather use the opportunity to show what you can do with the information that you have learned -
ANALYSIS
is very important here.



MATHEMATICS TEST
Change your perception, mathematics is your best friend!

Ensure that you PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. To get a good grade you will need to do more than simply knowing the formulae.

Read the problem thoroughly before starting your calculations.

Ensure that you are familiar with your calculator. Do not use a calculator that you are not familiar with on the day of the exam.

(1/100); milli (1/1000)
REDUCING ANXIETY
Ensure that you PREPARE from early. Staying up the night before and cramming increases anxiety and the pressure to retain information in a short period.

Instead of thinking or speaking negatively, use positive self- talk; tell yourself that you can ace the test and that you will do your best. This is especially important for auditory learners.


Stop saying:

"This is the most difficult course"
"I failed mathematics last year so there is a high
probability that I will fail again this year"
"No matter what I do, I will never pass; I am a lost cause"

REDUCING ANXIETY
Take short breaks while study; do something that will help you to relax. Studying for extended period of time without a break can leave you anxious and stressed.

Ensure that you maintain a routine, get adequate rest and have a healthy diet during the days leading up to the exam.

Visualize yourself in the exam room confidently answering the questions in a calm manner. This is especially useful for VISUAL learners.

Arrive at the exam venue early; use this time to collect your thoughts and relax yourself.





REDUCING ANXIETY
Use one of the following relaxation techniques
DEEP BREATHING -
1. Sit straight up in your chair in a good posture position.

2. Slowly inhale through your nose.

3. As you inhale, first fill the lower section of your lungs and work your way up to the upper part of your lungs.

4. Hold your breath for a few seconds.

5. Exhale slowly through your mouth.

6. Wait a few seconds and repeat the cycle
THE PALMING METHOD: (A visualization technique

1. Close and cover your eyes using the centre of the palms of your
hands.
2. Prevent your hands from touching your eyes by resting the lower
parts of your palms on your cheekbones and placing your fingers
on your forehead. Your eyeballs must not be touched, rubbed or
handled in any way.
3. Think of some real or imaginary relaxing scene. Mentally visualize
this scene. Picture the scene as if you were actually there, looking
through your own eyes.
4. Visualize this relaxing scene for one to two minutes.
TENSING AND DIFFERENTIAL RELAXATION METHOD
1.Put your feet fl at on the floor.
2. With your hands, grab underneath the chair.
3. Push down with your feet and pull up on your chair at the
same time for about five seconds.
4. Relax for five to ten seconds.
5. Repeat the procedure two or three times.
6. Relax all your muscles except the ones that are actually
used to take the test.
Anxiety reducing method where you tense and relax your
muscles.
MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAMS
Be careful when shading in your answers, ensure that you do not shade outside of the circle.

Do not erase your initial answers unless you are sure that it is wrong; chances are may erase the correct answer. Have confidence in yourself!

Look out for questions that ask you to identify the answer that is not true or all of the following apply except. These questions are asking you to choose an incorrect answer.

Answer all questions. You have nothing to gain by not answering a question and in most cases a 25% chance of selecting the correct answer. Guess if you must but ensure that it is an educated guess.
