He was picking berries when he realized that he heard a sound in his mind, but it was not just in his mind it was a plane going over his shelter. He had a mound of wood ready to burn as a signal fire on top of a cliff, but he a ways away from it when he heard the sound of the plane. He tried to run to the fire and send out a signal. It would have worked but the plane went by too fast and he missed it. That was his one chance of hope, now he thinks there is no chance of him getting saved. Now he has nothing left and has no hope for anyone finding him. He also has a very important decision...wait and hope for the best, or kill himself on the spot.
Brian made a fish spear but he was too slow. Instead he made a bow so that he could shoot the spear at the fish.
Brian took the spear and missed a fish. He remembered refraction from science class, aimed lower and hit a fish. He finally had a real meal in days.
After the plane passed, he spent the rest of that day with no hope and a desire to kill himself. He went to the ridge with his hatchet to cut himself, but he couldn't do it. From that moment on he decided to accept that living in the wild would be his new life.
He has learned a new type of hope, tough hope. Instead of hoping that other people will save him, he has hope in himself that he can survive. He learned how to shoot his own fish with his own bow and arrow so he would not starve.
Although mother nature threw many obsticles at Brian, he kept fighting and surviving. However, accidentally, a plane received an emergency transmission from Brian's location. He didn't realize that he sent one...he was only playing with the switches. The plane showed up and rescued him.
Brian was down by the lake washing his hands when heard a noise behind him. He slowly turned around and saw a big moose, so he sat there and stared. The moose charged at him and through him in the water, almost killing him.
After dragging himself back up to his shelter with broken ribs he fell asleep. A noise awakened him and at that moment he knew it was a tornado. The tornado wrecked almost everthing he had and made him start all over.
The tornado flipped over the plane and lifted it up to the surface of the water. He had the idea of checking the plane for a survival kit and food. He went to the plane and found the bag, dragged it to shore and opened it. There was food, matches, a sleeping bag, compass, and more importantly an emergency transmitter that he thought wasn't working.
Author's Purpose
When he got back everyone was interested in Brian. He got several interviews from newspapers and television. After about two months the interest was long gone.
Although his mom is still with the guy in the station wagon, Brian came close but never told his dad about the secret.

The author wrote the book to entertain the reader.
It's the part of the plot where the author introduces the reader to the setting and characters.
It's the problem the main character has to face throughout the story's plot.
A series of events connected to the conflict that build to the climax.
It's when the main character(s) come to a turning point with his/her problem - things will either get better or they will get worse.
A series of events connected to the climax that lead us to the resolution.
It's the event that solves the conflict of the story.
It wraps up the story - usually it explain how life was after the conflict was resolved.
It's the reason why the author wrote the book - to entertain, to persuade, to inform, to explain, to give directions, to summarize, etc.
It's the lesson the author wants us to learn about the human condition - what we can learn to improve our own lives.
Author's Theme

Hope is your best weapon to survive;
Appreciate all of the little things in life like water, food, shelter, and family /friends.
