Transcript of Divergent Book Report
Genre: Science Fiction Theme The theme of Divergent
is Overcoming Adversity because Beatrice and Four fight back against the Erudite's mind control to save the Abnegations. Summary The book Divergent is about a girl named Beatrice who lives in a world that's divided into five factions, each dedicated to different values—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Once every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction that they will live in the rest of their lives. Beatrice takes a test that will help her determine which faction she should live in, and the results come back saying that she is Divergent. Being Divergent is very uncommon and it could mean death for the person. On the day that they have to choose which faction to live in Beatrice makes the surprising decision to become Dauntless. Everyone is shocked and her father is upset with her, at first she is worried that she chose the wrong faction but when she looks at her mother, her mother smiles at her. At first being Dauntless is a challenge but with the help of a cute instructor named Four, she learns to make it through. When the Dauntless people are mind-controlled into starting a war to whip out the Abnegation people Beatrice finds that the mind-control doesn't work on her because she's Divergent, and it turns out that Four is Divergent as well. Together they work with friends to stop the war and bring peace back into the factions. Citations 1% of the way through the book Beatrice is having breakfast with her family and she says to herself, "On these mornings when my brother makes breakfast, and my father's hand skims my hair as he reads the newspaper, and my mother hums as she clears the table - it is on these mornings that I feel guiltiest for wanting to leave them
