6th Grade (9/2/2014)
Baseball is a
great
team sport to play. It gives players
exercise
and they get to
make new friends
. This summer you
should
join a team!
convince the reader to agree
with the author's opinion.

Ex) advertisements, commercials,
newspaper articles, letters
Includes:
positive adjectives, reasons why, and opinion words.
Inform: teach the reader something by giving information and facts about a topic.
Wolves are
relatives
of
coyotes
,
foxes,

and
dogs
. Like a dog, wolves have a good
sense
of
smell, vision,
and
hearing
.
Entertain
to tell a story or give information that is funny / makes a reader laugh

ex) comic strip, jokes, fictional story, poem, play
Entertain Text

Falling Up-Shel Silverstein

I tripped on my shoelace
and I fell up,
Up to the roof tops,
Up over the town,
Up past the tree tops,
Up over the mountains,
Up where the colors
Blend into the sounds.
But it got me so dizzy
When I looked around,
I got sick to my stomach
and I threw down.

Let's practice together...
We will read a piece of text about playing sports and decide what the author's purpose is.

After each paragraph, we'll underline / discuss key words that we think help identify if it is to persuade, inform, or entertain.
Pass out Author's Purpose handout.
Practice on your own...

You will be given Author's Purpose cards within a stapled packet.
Read each card
and
decide the Author's Purpose.
Look for
key words
to help you.

You also will have an
answer sheet
to
record
your answers. Each card has a number #. On the answer sheet,
circle:

inform, persuade, entertain
for each card.
Sometimes authors write to tell us information. Write 2-3 sentences using facts to tell about any animal of your choice.

Ex) A monkey's tail helps it climb and swing from trees.
